Steering columns

Does anyone know if a steering column out of a '63 impala will work in our trucks? They look similiar but a little different. It would look cool I think. I may have to modify it a little, but has anyone done anything like this before?

Re: Steering columns

measure how long it is compared to your original and then look at how it mounts up to the impala..might create a real strange angle in your truck that wont be to comphy to drive with

Re: Steering columns

Lots of columns will fit these trucks. I used one from a '68 full size Buick in my '72. I put one from a '69 Gran Prix in my nephew's '68. I used one from a '77 El Camino in my '71. In each case, i just fabbed up a new column to dash bracket and changed the wiring harness end (on the El Camino and Buick columns i pulled the ignition switch and molded in the hole).

Re: Steering columns

If you like the Impala wheel better why not just put it on your truck column? I'm pretty sure it will bolt right up. Most steering shafts were the same size back then.

Re: Steering columns

Thanks for the input everyone. The column in my truck is a 3 speed column shift and I'm putting a 700r4 in it. I can't figure out the best way to put a shifter in. I've got a '63 biscane thats going to the crusher and its got a auto column in it with a powerglide. I can use that column until I can find a tilt reasonable. I thought about keeping my column and getting a lokar floor shift, but even thats about two hundred. I guess I'm just cheap. I've got the money, but until the economy turns around, I'm trying to spend the least possible to get this thing running. I'm not sure which way to go, just thinking out loud I guess.

Re: Steering columns

How about something out of a '88 up Chevy truck? I see 'em being parted out all the time. You should be able to pick up a column at a fairly reasonable price.
