window hard to roll up

My driver window rolls down just fine but going up is another story. First, the glass starts to pop out and doesn`t stay in the door which I`m guessing is my problem. I have to guide the glass to get the window up. I`m more afraid of my crank breaking off than the glass popping all the way out. How do I fix this and is it a easy (read that as cheap) fix?

Re: window hard to roll up

Check your rear window track/guide. My 77 had the same problem, turns out the weld broke between the track/guide and the mounting tab.

Re: window hard to roll up

My passenger side window acts similar, it's easy going down, but almost impossible to go up. It binds up, I worry about breaking the crank or window, and I have to pull up on the window while cranking it. I found out over the weekend that one of the track rollers is broken off.

Re: window hard to roll up

Thanks guys. sorry it took so long to reply. I`m in the middle of another repair at the moment. I`ll take a look at the rollers and see if thats the proble. I want to go to power windows eventually.

Re: window hard to roll up

Can the rollers be replaced? if so has anyone done it, and how hard was it to do?

Re: window hard to roll up

Yo! I've done full rebuilds in my '68 Mustang, '76 Camaro, and '78 K20 (to name a few!) and all of them have simply involved a wire clip holding the roller onto a shaft. Piece of cake! With the door panel off, you'll be able to assess your particular situation, find the right vendor for the rollers, and see how easy they are to replace. Window position, up, down, or in-between, will put each of them within reach. I use EP grease in each track and on the rollers for smooth, easy function. Don't forget to clean and grease the crank gear!
As mentioned above, my '69 F100 has a track that has a fractured weld and I'll have to figure out a proper fix for that,...probably remove, spot weld, and re-install. When I can get to THAT! Todd.

Wow, now I learnt something! I'll check my old regulator and on a '76 I have. Otherwise I was gonna get another regulator out of the junkyard.

(P.S. '73 has little rollers, '76 has bigger rollers, not interchangeable. $13 lesson.)
