front shock mount question

I was doing a tune up last night and I noticed that the upper shock mounts looked like they were welded all the way around on both sides. It almost looks factory but I don`t know if it is. Part of one weld chipped off at some point. The stud is there and doesn`t appear to be welded. Is this normal? If not I`ll try to get some pics later.

It is not normal. Normally there is just a stamped hole. Someone did repairs to the frame. The stud was bolted on from the factory.

Thats what I was afraid of. I`ll have to take a closer look at it to see if it`s safe. I might even call the PO and see if he can add any info on it.

I had to do that repair on my 1978 stepside. The shock stud came loose and egged out the hole. I never had any problems after that. What Harley dealer do you work for? I am also a Harley tech.

What are the chances of 2 Harley techs on here both with 84`s? I`m guessing yours is a 84 by your screen name.

Well I started out at Fairfield HD and moved with then to the current location where it was Vacaville HD. Then I went to Sacramento HD but got laid off last December. I`ve worked at 2 aftermarket shops this year and they suck. I haven`t worked in 2 weeks. Well, not at the shop anyway.

Sorry to here that you haven't been working. It is getting slow at our shop but they seem to have enough work to keep us going so far. My truck is a 1984.

when your the new guy you go home first if there isn`t enough work for everyone. I`ve been doing it since 2002 and I`m ready for something else and just keep bikes as side work. I got enough regular customers to kep some money coming through.

That is the good thing about side work, someone always wants their bike worked on. if the repair on your shock mount was done by a good welder it should be fine. I never had an issue with the one I repaired.

my old 65 had the egging losse shock mount. The weld is better then the washer repair.

As stated above ^^^^^^ if it was done by a good welder your all set!

Yeah I make pretty good money on side jobs. I`ll have to take a close look at the welds. I noticed it last night and light wasn`t on my side. They looked ok except for the driver side did have a piece of the weld broken, maybe a 1/8-1/4" section. I need to take a good look at it and if it`s questionable I`ll have it redone.

This is a common fix as indicated. If it was welded right, it should be fine.

COMMON GM shock/frame stress problem. I have done quite a few of those and the trucks are still running great.
