Re: Opinions wanted

I say go for it. You could use the low setting as your "romantic" lighting when you are out with the other half, and the high setting for looking at your "truck" mags when tou're out by yourself. J/K I think it would be kind of cool.

Re: Opinions wanted

I think if it were really useful the new cars would have it. I don't see any real use for it to be honest. How about a door switches and a delay relay?

Re: Opinions wanted

It's a great idea, in my boats cabin unless your checking a chart or reading something all you need is to see to move around in fact its better not to impair your ningt vision.
I think it would be handy in a vehicle as well. Most of the time when I get in or out of my vehicle in dark areas a burst of light is not always welcome and I have taken the bulb out of the truck altogether so I could see what was going on in the area while the door was open. It would probaly be a good idea to do the same with the cargo light if youre say night fishing and need to tell the difference between what kind of drink youre getting out of the ice chest, I dont know but I think I'm going to install it in my truck but this is coming from a guy who takes the beeper out of a new truck so he can have the doors open and enjoy the radio. To each his own.

Re: Opinions wanted

Some of the late 80's GM big cars (Buick Park avenue for one) have a rheostat in the dash to control the dash lights that should work for doing just that. Actually any similar adjustable rheostat should work. You will have to do some extra wiring though.

A rheostat will not work with LEDs.

Re: Opinions wanted

A better idea to me would be directional lights like they put in now, that would light up one side of the truck or the other. i.e., the passenger could read a map and not distract the driver.

Re: Opinions wanted

Ive seen high and low "beam" lights on the vanity mirrors of visors. Might be a good place to find the right switches and wiring.

My plans are to make a dome light,or two now(I am digging the directional idea). So yes, opinions and idea's matter, and everyone's is considered.

I have a friend that is going to be making the LED panels for them with the wiring and switches.

Re: Opinions wanted

A directional light from a "Custom"(read aftermarket conversion van) might be the way to go.You would need to do something about the housing if you wanted something stock looking or to fit your theme(unless your theme is Conversion van).
I think some of those lights were originally adapted from boat use.

Re: Opinions wanted

I'd do it! Low for if you need it while driving and high for when the door opens.

Re: Opinions wanted

Are you "set" on having LEDs? If not, a fade in and out would also be cool. Close the door and watch the dome light slowly dim to off. You might even be able to dim LEDs with pulse width modulation. My two pennies.

I think that would be good idea for dome light 2.0 This first one I want to keep simple. With LED's you don't have heat problems with the lens.I will be milling these out of aluminum and the thicker the stock is the more it cost. With the LED's I can use thiner stock and mount them close to the lens. With incandescent I would have to keep the bulb away from the lens and use thicker stock and more machine time.I will check prices on aluminum maybe it will not be an issue. As always I am trying to keep my prices down so everyone can afford my parts.Thats part of the reason I don't do the finishing.Like Spray-Bomb said "Just a little elbow grease".

I forgot to mention I am trying to keep everything I make under $60.00
Thanks for the input,
Ken

Re: Opinions wanted

I think it would be nice to have the two settings to be independent and have it more like map lights as mentioned. Directionally installed to not add glare to the driver.
