Thinking about a crazy cross country trip.

So it is done, I sold my blazer.

Tuesday or Wednesday I am going to be picking up my new truck, a 85 Chevy Dually in Houston. It has 136K on the clock, and the motor has a tick. I am picking it up for 1500 bucks.

I am seriously considering flying to Boise Id to buy this truck.

It is a 99 model, has a Vortec 454 and a NV4500, 156K miles on it.

If I do I am going to fly up over new years to get it. It will be a 2775 mile trip, stopping off in my home town in Montana to pick up my 93 Z28 Camaro.

I wont know until tomorrow if I am going to get the truck or not. We will see what happens. If it works out, I am going to stuff the motor in my 85 dually, after I rebuild it of course, and use the 2wd NV4500 out of my 72 dually in the 85, and then take the 4x4 NV4500, hook it to a NP205 and install it in the 72 1 ton after I convert it to a SRW and cut the frame down to a short box. Then once I can track down a dana 60 I will get it installed under the front using DIY4X hangers, and have a couple of damn nice trucks.

Plan B. is I will buy this truck, that is here in Texas...

It has a 12 Valve Cummins, and a NV4500 in it. I could stuff the drive train from it in either my 85 or 72 Dually. I do have all the stuff I would need except for the Axle to convert the 85 to a 4x4.

This is a rendering of what I was going to do if I converted my 72 Dually to a 4x4 and stuffed a Cummins in it.

If I go this route I am building a custom frame for it. But were starting to talk about a lot of time to do that.

Not sure what I am going to do yet, Also if I can find anyone on here near Ontario Or. I was hoping I could get some one to go over and look at the truck for me.

Re: Thinking about a crazy cross country trip.

Sounds like a plan! You should put a Cummins in the 85 and the 72, that would be SWEET!

Re: Thinking about a crazy cross country trip.

So you found one a lot closer to home huh.. Well what you save in plane tickets and fuel you could put toward another engine in the 85 if it needs it. I thought that 88 was the pick.

Yeah, the 88 had a replacement engine in it, and I got a bad feeling about it, also they wouldn't come off the price at all. So I decided not to get it.

Re: Thinking about a crazy cross country trip.

Give me a PM, I am off on Monday and could go check it out for you. I live only 20 miles from Boise. I could pick you up from the Airport and you could even shack up at my place for the evening.

Re: Thinking about a crazy cross country trip.

So, if I understand correctly, you will be spending 4 grand plus a plane ticket & fuel to get home for a 150,000 mile 454 to rebuild, and a 5 spd?

No, they are asking 2995 for the truck, I am probably going to offer 2500. The plane ticket will cost 275.00, and I am figuring it will cost me about another 550.00 for fuel and food. then maybe a motel in Springfield, Co or Amarillo, Tx.

Yeah, id hook a tow bar on it and drag it back to texas. I still have 3 more cars in montana I need to get, and a whole bunch of tools. The other two cars are a 79 Trans AM WS6, and a 71 Olds Cutlass.

Re: Thinking about a crazy cross country trip.

Well the truck in Oregon has a bad motor, so it is out of the running. We will see here over the next few days what I come up with.
