Question Guage wiring--Again

I know this has been killed alot around here but I have a confusion question. Picked up a factory guage /bezel panel to use in my truck to replace the idiot lite one. Been reviewing what's needed.

1. need to rewire the connector for the changes
2. need a different temp sender

Things I didn't find and are not sure of

1. is the oil pressure sensor the same for both idiot light & gauge or do I need to swap it out also.

2. My truck is a 70 and the guage panel came out of a 68. I noticed that if you went to buy a new dash harness they list the 67-68 as one item and the 69-72 as another item. What, if anything, is the difference and is this going to cause a problem.

My engine is the 250 I6 if that makes any difference

The oil pressure goes to the oil guage thru a small diameter oil line. No sensor involved. You have to install a small fitting back by the distributor. I'm not sure on the differences between the years, but I swapped a buddies idiot light dash for a guage one, and all that I had to do was relocate the ground in the harness and one turn signal wire. Dark blue I think. Hope that helps, Jeff.

Go to GMCPauls site. He has a tech page and lists the procedure step by step with a schematic.

red71cheyenne, you only had to move 2 wires!? When i slapped a guage panel into a light panel (not knowing the harnesses were differant) i had a whole bunch of lights not work properly, and my fuel guage fried after spinning around like on a cartoon or something. Did EVERYTHING work after just 2 wires being moved?

Those are the only two I remember. It might have been more, but those are the only two I remember. I just went off the schematic in my haynes manual. It didn't take very long, I remember that. Jeff.

Just wanted to try to speculate an answer of your question in reference to the differances in the older dash panel's. I believe the older ones had provisions for manual chokes and the 69 and newer had automatic chokes which counts for an additional hole in the panel. Is this correct??

69 and newer do NOT have the choke hole. You are correct!

I knew about the choke hole but I was wondering why the wiring harnesses were listed as different numbers. I was curious if there was something different in the actual wiring between a guage dasy for 67-68 and one for 69-72?
