new info on the drop spindles vs control arms thread

i emailed DJM to ask them about their lower arms and if they maintained stock geometry. this was the reply..

The spindle remains in the same position. The upper arm is now angeled upward to allow your truck to lower

I made a couple phone calls last week on dropped arms, one was to DJM tech info, & the other was to Charley's drop shop. from the info I gathered, the dropped lower arms are made shorter than stock to correct geometry problems that happen with that type drop. The "optional " upper arms are made longer to also help with alignment.......without adding a bunch of shims. I have a 3" drop on front of the longhorn(cut coil), & it does change the angle of the top arm quite a bit! I talked with Charley for about 1/2hr, ......a great guy to talk with, with loads of good ideas!

....going thru my collection of magazines and the February 2000 issue of Custom Classic Trucks has an article detailing the alteration of control arms to drop a 63 and up truck. I know that they modified an upper control arm for the article, but my concern is all that cutting and welding that was needed to modify the A-arm when swapping in another spindle would accomplish the same thing with a lot less work....and retain the original stamping of the upper A-frame and its' inherent strength. If all aftermarket A-frames are cut and modified in a similar manner, well, let's just say that I am more than satisfied with my dropped spindles.

Okay. I'm gonna be quiet for now.

Im not too nuts about cutting & modifying stock arms either, & will more likely go for the aftermarket tube style arms(top), as they are longer than stock to help with alignment with the shorter springs......
