retrosoundusa radios?

I'm looking at the radio from retrosoundusa.com that will fit in our trucks without cutting anything. I really like the look and the ipod hook-up and stuff. I'm pretty much sold on getting one unless someone knows something that I don't.

Is anybody out there using one of these? How do you like it. $300 is a big chunk to pay for a pile of junk if that is what it will turn out to be.

Maybe there is a better radio that will fit in there and look good too that is better quality. I was looking at the USA-5 radio for about $250 but I saw a lot of negative feedback on that radio on here, but what about the retrosound radios? Feedback please.

Re: retrosoundusa radios?

I am in the boat as you. I have not heard one good thing about any of these radios to fit our trucks. I am now going to have a factory one sent off and made am/fm with i-pod and cd changer hook up. Its around $250.00. I am trying to find out if our trucks had just am or if there was an am/fm option. Gary

Re: retrosoundusa radios?

The reason you never hear anything good about these radios is that people use JUNK speakers with them. Your sound quality is determined by the speakers, NOT the radio. I have used customautosound radios, and they work GREAT if you use good speakers (bose, infinity, etc)

Re: retrosoundusa radios?

Any head unit just gets the sound from the source; i.e., radio station, auxiliary device, Ipod, CD etc, to the speakers. What YOU do dictates the sound quality. Although my truck's dash was boogered up from the get-go, I kept the 1-DIN Sony (Ipod ready) head unit but I run everything through the RCA outs and into a Performance Tekniques ICBM 7500 600Watt amp that is mounted under the passenger bucket seat and then I use 6 x 9's in the doors (alot of folks don't want to do this [cutting up doors] and I understand) and I have a pair of Pioneer 6 1/4" kick panel speakers. Suffice to say it is MORE than adequate.
As the "Zepp" eluded to. The sound is only as good as the amp/speakers and placement is key for optimal sound.

You can also get one of those "Hidden" systems and keep your old junker AM in the dash.

Re: retrosoundusa radios?

I installed one of these in a customers Blazer, and it fit well, and sounded great. The shafts are a bit long, but for someone who wants a no cut dash it is the way

I remember thinking the same thing when I was installing mine. The shafts are long, but I figure it's a way for them to make 1 model that can fit as many different types of vehicles as possible. I made a couple of spacers for mine that set the radio back in the dash a little so the knobs are not sticking out so far.

Re: retrosoundusa radios?

I bought one for my truck, but I haven't installed it yet. The studs are little long, but it still beats butchering the dash IMO. .

These trucks were available with AM/FM radios, but you'll usually pay $250 - $350 for a nice one (working or not usually). You an also use a van radio from the early 70's that isn't 100% correct, but looks right at home in these trucks.

Re: retrosoundusa radios?

Here is my .02. I installed a retro sound radio in a 72 1 ton dually. I contacted Retrosound and they suggested I buy it from JEGS as that was their lowest priced seller. It was not terribly complicated to install, but I think I have figured out a way to recess the shafts a bit better. I installed the first one and it worked fine for a couple of days, then suddenly nothing. I contacted Retrosound and they were extremely helpful.(I have to give them an A+ for Customer service). It turns out that they have had a few very random issues of the radios basically getting erased. They still work if they are reprogrammed, but for some reason they are randomly getting erased. THey can not attribute it to any electrical surge or problems. The only connecting factor they can find is that the vehicles are usually 70's models, both stock and non stock electrical. THey asked me to send it back and they would send another one out. They stated they would not reprogram the old one, since they don't know if it is a problem with the radio. I just got it back and should be installing it today or tomorrow. I'll try and take pics and see if I can get the shafts recesssed any better.
