Be Sure And Check Your Fuel Sending Unit

I'm working on the '70 4x4 and I started out by rebuilding the Carb., taking out all of the plugs, loading up the cylinders with PB Blaster, and after letting it set for a while give them all a shot of oil. I also wanted to drain the fuel tank and start off with all fresh fuel. As you can see in the first picture the tank is in excellent shape. I decided to pull the sending unit/pickup tube assembly out to siphon the gas out and I'm glad I did. The next three pictures are what I found. The float arm is stuck as well as the other obvious problems.... Moral of the story is "just cause the tank looks really good on the outside doesn't mean it is on the inside".. I also found the two objects in the last picture inside the tank. (top of one & bottom of the other) They looked like rivet heads that someone had dropped in, so I got my new telescoping magnet out to retrieve them. The magnet would not pick them up. (crappy magnet) I finally turned the tank upside down and fished them out of the sending unit hole. It wasn't the magnets fault, they were made out of lead...  ..LockDoc

Wow, I have never seen anything that looked that bad. I am glad you pulled that out, especially this early in the game.

The lead pellets are from the 80's when they started with no lead gas. Some companies were selling them and saying to put them in the tank so you could still have leaded gas. I guess it was suposed to leach into the gas some how.

That looks familiar...just changed mine in my Blazer over the summer this year - I was surprised with what I saw...not as bad as yours though.
