Pics of engine progress
Here is a pic of the new rocker arms and springs we installed this weekend.
And here's a pic of the gear drive. And finally, a pic of the engine, just about finished.

Damn, looks exceptional. I think it'll be a nice addition to your truck. Can maybe you or someone else explain to me the difference between a noise and quiet gear drive or is it just something you can't discribe, just a sound? Looks nice, keep up the good work.

From what I have been told, the quiet are still noticeable. The noisy ones are annoying to some, guess it's a personal preference thing. The ones I have heard make you think a blower resides under the hood. The difference is how the gears are cut. The noisy are straight cut gears.
I wanted noisy - that will match the rest of the truck . . . noisy!

Oh, okay I guess. It's just a preference thing then. I'd prolly like the quiet, that way I could hear the thump of the cam better. lol. Is that gear drive a wet or dry system? I was just wondering. Again nice motor. Looks better than that greasy goblin you had before.

As I understand it, there are a couple small holes that allow oil in this area, not changed from what is there stock.
The ignition is an Accel blueprint HEI distributor and I bought an MSD coil, the one that can stand up to more vibration. I just couldn't afford to go with an MSD distributor. Budget has to stop ya somewhere.

NOISE !!!!!!!!
Hay, I had a gear drive on a "D" stroked 400 in a 79 z28 I had. LOVE THAT SOUND!!! Mine was the quiter cut though, You could only hear mine from the frontand side, sounded like a blower. I had 2.5" flowmasters dumping at the rear so that's all you could hear.
Looks great, keep up the good work, it'll be worth it in the end.

Offroad Design sells a 1" block that is drilled to offset the axle one inch, forward or back. That should be a good way - other option, get a flatbed, then you will never know the difference :p

Beware the Accel dist. I got 2 bad ones in a row. The guy at the speed shop then tells me 6 out of 10 are bad. I got my $ back, went to the local Chevy dealer and bought a new GM one for $30 more. Just my 2c. Good Luck.
Motor looks GREAT

Wrathchild - I got the valve covers after Mike C suggested them. I got them from Scroggin Dickey for $98 for the pair. Last time I checked they were down to $90! The are aluminum and seem awesome. Mike C has a pair also.
matt_field, it's a Pete Jackson gear drive. chevy2racr - I better hold on the the valve cover's, but I know where you can get a heck of a deal on them! Mike C - thanks for all you encouragement to get me to paint it - to think I was gonna just leave it unpainted. What was I thinking. 1970 CST Short Wide, thanks for the heads up. I sure hope I luck out, I don't need any problems! Just got in from getting the timing cover cleaned up. Acetone is your friend, I scraped for 45 minutes before hitting the silicone goo with the Acetone, melted it off real good.

You'll know if the dist is bad when you cant get any advance out of it. It will work then not work, something with the moduale they tell me. When they work its great, you know the rest.
Good Luck Keep us posted when that thing makes fire. I want your opinion on how big a differance you feel from the Small Block to the BIG BLOCK. Damn thats a Pretty Motor
