Me 2, mice 0

Finally won a battle, but the war goes on. I drove my truck for the first time in a couple of months and after it warmed up I heard some squeaking from the ac vents. I figured it was babies, and contemplated letting momma get them out, but I had already made a few stops and couldn't be sure she hadn't jumped off somewhere. Also there was almost no air blowing out the vents and what was smelled like mice p#ss. I've had them before near the heater,so I took the ductwork off under the dash. No nest but I still heard the noise. Turns out they were on the fresh air side of the AC/heater. Was able to suck them out by removing the hood hinge and blower motor. They chewed through some of the fan blades to be able to bring all that nest material in there. Some day I'll figure out where they are getting in. I hate mice!!!!

Yep, that's an ongoing problem with these trucks. I have two that have that problem right now.

Nothing like fining out you`ve been breathing heated mouse poop and pee all that time.I`ve come upon mouse homes in many a heater box.I`ve found melted parts due to blockage from thier nesting.Ever find a snake? Now,that`s exciting! How about cutting out a dash center section when a black snake springs out and bites at the sawzall?Funny thing is,it was my friend it happened to on my truck.Just helping out. So,I missed out.Bummer

Re: Me 2, mice 0

I tried to poison the suckers at my place. They took all the poison and stored it for winter...ALL OVER MY SHOP! In anything they could get into there is poison. They even put some in the front of the hood on my 68. I open the hood and all this poison comes pouring out. Thats when I made the choice to store my truck in a different building. I hopefully they ate some while they were busy storing it.

Re: Me 2, mice 0

The one foolproof way I found to get them in the barn was to leave a container of water with antifreeze open. The container must have a small top so nothing else can get in. Put ping pong balls in so they dont think they are just jumping into water. They jump in to get a drink, but cant float on top of the balls. The anti freeze keeps them from smelling once they drown. I forgot to check the container one summer and had about twenty in it. They evidently dont mind jumping in on floating dead mice.

This is what I found to keep mice out. http://www.earth-kind.com/Store/Fres...1/default.aspx
It even has a John Deere part number, but it's very expensive at the JD store.

NICE!! I'm going to try that too. Do you need to cover the water with the ping pong balls or just a few?

Re: Me 2, mice 0

I use a 5 gallon bucket of water to drown mice in, (also works on chip monks). I sprinkle birdseed on top of the water. They jump in to eat and drown. I don't use antifreeze as the cats around my place may drink the liquid and die.

Good thing about getting mice in a bucket as you can catch lots of them!

Re: Me 2, mice 0

barraza,

From my experience if your truck is solid the mice have to get in through the cowl screen. Every since we installed hardware screen under the cowl we have not had one mouse get into any of our 10 trucks.

When I first got my truck, there was a huge hole in my seat and alot of foam missing.

I found out why later when I pulled the heater fan out. Those little suckers packed it full... lol

I understand your feelings on mice.

Re: Me 2, mice 0

When I bought mine I drove it home, it had been in a barn for some time. On the way home the windows started to fog so I turned on the heater, it looked like popcorn flying out of the defroster vents, so I shut off the fan and opened up the vent wings then the floor vent. More white fluff flew out of the floor vents! I took a bucket full of seat filling out of the fan box, defrosters and vents. By the grace of god it does not smell at all. When I looked under the seat I found two mousetraps that the previous owner had installed. I have the same problem with my Jeep Cherokee plow truck, it sets all summer and the mice raise hell with it. I have taken to keeping a cube of poison in the glove box of the jeep and in the well in the cab corner (under the jack) in the truck. Problem seems to be solved. I do find nibbling on them, but never any damage to the trucks.

Yah, but how long will your Terrier live in the cab?

I accidently locked one of my cats in a car once. He was in there for about 4 days before we noticed him, I figured a Fisher got him, he was none the worse for wear when he got out. Real thirsty though!

Re: Me 2, mice 0

Yep they were in my shop too. While we had the rear end out of my sons Cobra the mice were happily building a new home in the flowmasters. We put it back together and he fired it up I started yelling "Shut it down now" then realized what I saw shooting out of the pipes was, "68 Chevy C-10 bench seat" that was in the shop also. Never saw any meeses so I guess the Cobra gottem...

Re: Me 2, mice 0

Just after Thanksgiving 2007 I had a mouse get in my house. At first i thought i was seeing things out of the corner of my eye. It would dart around my living room from couch to couch then down the hall. After a couple of beers one evening i came up with the brilliant idea to mouse fish since he was on a fairly stable route. Went out back and got a stick, 1 gal ziploc, and some left over ham from my sisters Thanksgiving dinner. Made a trap, tied it to the pole like a lure, and sat back with a beer in the recliner. Into the second beer it came out and just couldn't resist the ham and I got the sucker.

Re: Me 2, mice 0

I was helping my friend who`s building a truck yesterday.Last week he put the defroster hoses in and tryed it out...no air.Can you guess what he found in the heater box?I told him there`s a thread on just this topic on the board right now,so he`s not alone.
My K/20 Highlander was so plugged up parts were melting. It`s a given, any truck that has spent a length of time (not alot) out of daily service will most likely have mice in the heater.
The word is out in the mouse world and has been passed down through many generations.

Squirrels are rodents, i.e., Tree Rats, right? I'm thinking about the container of antifreeze that has the small opening that a squirrel would fit into, not a cat or a dog. The floating ping-pong balls concept sounds good, maybe with some birdseed sprinkled on top, too.

I wonder how large the container would have to be to be good for the year?
