When I open my hood I have to pull it up to open it, whereas when I first got it it sprung up. What do I do to fix it?

first thing I would say is try some lubricant? Dont mean to sound S.A. Mine was the same way and some moly grease did the trick. My .02

In addition to lubing the hinges, the latch ass'y also needs lubed. I was amazed to find that my latch was the reason that the hood would not pop up on my '96.

most 40year old moving parts could benefit from a good cleaning followed by lubrication

WD-40 is your friend.

SOAK all of the pivot points & then "exercise" the hinges by moving your hood up & down a LOT.
Then spray some more.

You'll be amazed at the difference.

I would use something other than WD 40 too, that stuff isn't all that great.
Study the hinges good, in reality, there will be like 6 or 8 points to spray IIRC.
If it is still stiff, and it doesn't seem to be actually sticking, then new springs are probably in order.

We can agree to disagree about WD-40.

But you are right; there are a 1/2 dozen, or so, pivot points on the hood hinges, on both the "hood" side & the "fender" side and all need to be lubed & lubed well.

WD 40 works great for lubrication....liquid wrench works way better for freeing up rusted parts.

I use air tool oil, the stuff with Moly in it. The Moly stays behind for a long time. The oil comes in 1 or 2 oz containers and has a nice drip oiler tip on it for precise application.

WD-40 seems to be everyone's generic spray "Lube".....like it is some miracle stuff that can do it all. The problem with things that "do it all" is that they don't do most of them very well. WD-40 is probable best for spraying inside a wet distributor cap....it is after-all specifically designed for "water displacement" (the WD).
For a penetrating oil or other general lubrication, there are far better choices.

I'm with Shane on this one, White Lithium grease is the thing here. It should also be used on the other moving parts of the body.....door hinges, hood and door latches, tailgate hinges/latches, etc.

i use lots of wd40 but mostly for just loosening up and clearing out the old crap and accumulation then follow up with the lubrication from the sprayable white lithium// just lubricating is ok but cleaning up then lubricating is far superior

Cleaning, especially rusty flakes/grit, is always a good thing.
