Question Swapping rear axles

Will the 5 lug axles in a 71' and newer truck fit a 69'??? I'd like to eventually go with 5 lug rims. Is the junkyard the best place to get axles?. T.I.A.

Re: Swapping rear axles

Unfortunately, no. There is a length difference of about 1/2" or so. You need to swap the entire housing.

Re: Swapping rear axles

The 71-72 rear ends are about 1 1/2" wider than the 69 rears. Measure yours from backing plate to backing plate then take that measurement with you to compare with the 71-72s you find.
Some late 70 rears are 6 lug but wider width so the later 5 lug axle will interchange. This is what I did for mine.
You can buy some aftermarket new axles for the 69 housing in 5 lug if you want. I think they're a couple hundred $ plus new 5 lug drums.
I would go the salvage yard route for a complete 71-72 rear.

I'll be doing the same conversion on my 69 c10. I found axles at summit and price is not too bad http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Re: Swapping rear axles

From what I've read, the 5 lug axles will fit, but you will need to put a 3/4" spacer behind each brake backing plate to put the brake shoes back in the center of the drums.

Re: Swapping rear axles

Problem with spacing the brakes out like that is that the axle bearings are no longer riding where they are supposed to on the axle.
