fusable link again

My 70 does not have the link between battery and junction block. In some of the wiring diagrams it looks like the wire from the bat to block is 18 gage and some look like it says 16 gage. According to this post below I found it is 10 gage. So would I be correct that the wire that comes on the bat cable is 10 gage and the link I would buy should be 16 gage? Does the link connect directly to the block or is there another wire between them?

Quote from the 1971 Chevroklet Truck Chassis Service Manual. " Fusible links in the Chevrolet wiring are four gauge sizes smaller than the cable it is designed to protect". The engine compartment wiring is illustrated as a 10 gauge red wire coming from ythe battery + to a junction block. A fusible link of 16 gauge wire attaches to the junction block and red 12 guage wire then to the various circuits. If you desire to construct your own link; use a short piece ( 1" or so) of solid ( not stranded!) wire attached to the junction. Slide a piece of heat shrink tubing down the 12 gauge wire and then solder the 16 gauge to the 12 guage. When solder joint has cooled; slide the heat shrink tubeing over the juntion of the 16 & 12 guage wires. .........

Re: fusable link again

Yes battery wire is 10 gage and you need a 16 gage fusible link. No there is no wire between them. The other wire you might see in pic is for optional equipment. I would have to look closer but I think it’s for the amp meter.

As you can see in pic attached the 10 gage goes between battery and junc block. The 16 gage fusible link goes between the junc block and main feed wire 12 gage RED

Hope this helps

The wireing diagram on this site shows the link between the bat wire and the junction block. What diagram did you post and does it make any difference which way?

Re: fusable link again

Makes sense to have it between the battery and the junction block. If my truck had been equipped with one, it would have saved me some $$ and some burned fingers from pulling the glowing 10-ga. wire in two, to save the truck from burning up.

Re: fusable link again

The pic is from a 1972 Chevrolet Truck wiring diagrams for complete chassis.

The primary purpose for the fusible link is to protect the wires in the total truck electrical system from burning up/melting and prevent the battery from receiving a high amp charge from a faulty alternator or regulator.

The advantage to wiring per the pic is you can add a high amp circuit to the truck like fog lights and others with out pulling more amps from the stock circuit design than it’s made for. Of course you will have to protect the added circuit with a fuse to prevent meltdown.

If no shorts or equipment malfunctions would happen you would not need any fusible link or fuses but that’s not how things are so I highly recommend running a fusible link in ether location the protection will still be there.

Some previous owner may have had it blow and fixed the problem and decided the fusible link was not needed and cut it out. Some aftermarket universal hot rod wiring harness might not use them. In my opinion it’s a good safety item to have to protect your wiring or truck from burning up. You can find them at the auto parts store, may be rated to the gage that it will be connected to. for example the fusible Link in the above pic is 16 gage connected to a 12 gage wire.

Re: fusable link again

My 72 has something on the black wire that looks like a fusible link. maybe it's just a butt end connector. No Fusible Link needs to be on the Black wire correct?

You may be talking about the inline fuse for the BATT Gauge. There's one located behind each headlight.

Re: fusable link again

I already looked for those and didn't see any on my 72. I'm actually referring to the black 14ga wire coming off the junction block. any idea where it goes?

Could have been replaced with a Non fuesable type wire. My 68 has a Factory fuse that can be replaced (4A) SFE glass fuse. FACTORY BABY!!
