Grumbling noise???

I have a grumbling noise that i believe is coming from the front end. I thought it was the wheel bearings so i just changed them out. The spinldes where in good condition and i found a supsect wheel bearing that some friction.

I have also just recently changed both u joints in the drive shaft.

The noise is still there. you can here it best when you shut the engine off and coast. does anyone have any suggestion as to where to look next?

Re: Grumbling noise???

The only grumbling noise I hear from the front of my truck is the wife!

Sorry, I just couldn't pass that one up. Seriously though, it does sound like a sticking caliper. Does it pull to the side when you let it coast?

Re: Grumbling noise???

Awsome......mine wife whines. thats why i know its not her.

it doesn't pull when i coast, but both front brakes do rub. ie if you jacked the truck up and spun the tire real good, it might make one full revolution before the wheel stops. is this normal?

i jacked the back end up and rotated the back tires. I found that the noise is beign cause by the drive shaft shifting inside the ujoint bearing caps. the rear U-joint mates to the rear end by two "u-bolts". on the rearend yoke there are two tabs that keep the bearing caps from sliding out. these tabs appear to be about .100" wider than the U-joint w/bearing caps. The caps had been pushed outward against the tabs leaving .100" movement along the axis of the two caps. everytime the driveshaft rotates 180deg, it falls down .100".
i am guessing the u joint might be the wrong one. this might be becasue the rearend is a 12 bolt out of a '79 3/4 ton. where as the ujoints i bought were meant for the original 10 bolt.

I beat the tabs inward until the play was removed.
