Maaco is having a sale. I think you can get a one stage paint job with no bodywork for 199.00. I dont think you will be able to do it yourself much cheeper unless you spray bom or roll it.

Re: best way to do a self paint job on my truck?
How nice do you want it? I did mine for about $300, but I didnt do ANY body work or rust repair. I just sanded it to bare metal, shot primer, shot color, then put the truck back together.
That cost doesnt include the shop, the air compressor, all the tools, or the electricity to run them, since I use the tools for all my vehicles. If you dont have a shop with painting equipment, either a quickie shop like Earl Schieb / Maacco or the roller and very thin paint works well for solid colors. The roller paint job will take the most time, since you sand, then roll, then sand after it dries, then roll, and repeat for 6 -10 coats. Figure a week for each body panel unless you have the time and energy to do the front fenders at the same time, then both doors, then the box and hood. Rattle can paint doesnt last, the yellow Krylon seems to last longest, black is the worst for wear. Gold isnt too far off yellow, and blue is right in the middle. Red looks like absolute crap. It takes roughly 10 cans to put one light coat and one heavy coat on a short box. |

Re: best way to do a self paint job on my truck?
Rattle can paint doesn't spray well to begin with, and only lasts 1 or 2 years. Also it is easy for them to splatter and drip. Rattle can clear yellows alot. My first paint job was the last one from the can. It is hard to buy enough... I decided on a color, then bought the only 2 or 3 Autozone had, then checkers, then walmart, then wait a week for them all to get their next shipment in.
I use the gravity fed spray gun kit from walmart. Shockingly, it can produce good results. It comes with a full size sprayer and a little detail gun, and accessories. I throw away the vent nozzle and internal filter, because they are too restrictive. I can buy paint for a whole truck under $100. But usually I am painting bumper covers, which on average costs $20, Plus clear, but I always get that one gallon at a time. I like to use a random orbit polisher as a sander, its faster and super cheap. The tools/equipent can be had for $200 Paint $100 Supplys $100 Your first paint job won't be perfect. optional is wet sanding and polishing it: $100 Metallic paint is much more expensive and harder to spray right. Besides, I'd rather be doing the real thing than the up and down hand motion.

Re: best way to do a self paint job on my truck?
I finished my painting last summer & like 79 says metalic ain't cheap. Mine is black, lots of metal flake, a little perl and a lot of clear. I would put pics up but they don't go. Truck looks sharp with 89 chrome slots on it. We have3 18" of snow on the ground now so baby stays indoors now. I'll get some pics then send them to someone so they can post them for me. I don't know how to deal with all the cropping or whatever I need to do to get them to fly. I do have a bunch of pics of the job as it progressed I can e-mail out. My e-mail is jmcclur2@nycap.rr.com

Little stuff left to do is mount winch, wet sand & buff out and build belly pan\running boards. Body work takes lots and LOTS of beer!!!! God, Guts and Guns made America and God, Guts and Guns will preserve it! The worst thing you could do is get into my sights, but that don't matter, you'll never know it, cause you'll never hear the shotJim or Paladin whichever you choose. |

Re: best way to do a self paint job on my truck?
I would look around for someone to rent you some spray booth time, then get a good gun from Eastwood -- they had a $200 kit set that wasn't too bad. It is made by Devilbiss, but isnt their best stuff --(still pretty good tho)
Nason makes about the least expensive paint you can use in solid colors. Painting a truck in a garage one time will make you wish you had sprung some coin to rent a booth

Re: best way to do a self paint job on my truck?
Whats the condition of the paint on the truck now? You'd be surprised how well a good polish and wax job can actually bring out the color and shine. That would be the cheapest.

Im really considering doing a rustoleum roller paint job i just read that topic that blackstone and it seems like it turns out really good
do you think i could shoot the rustoleum out of my gun? they said its only like $30 a gallon and they said it doesnt even take that much to paint the whole thing |
