Got a TH350 in my 72 that decided not to play nice on the way to work this morning. I'm sure this has been covered but I'm already late for work so I thought it'd just ask

I'm driving along on the interstate at 55-60mph and all of a sudden it was like the truck went into neutral. Hit the gas and the rpm's would raise but not more go-go. I got over to the side of the road and put the truck in park. Tried reverse and it worked fine and then went back to drive. It's not in first gear but won't shift up to 2nd or 3rd.

I drove in 1st and got pulled off at the next exit in a parking lot and am going to have it towed today. If the tranny is shot and going to have to go through a major rebuild or something I'll just find a 700R4 but I thought I'd get board thoughts before I did anything

Likely low fluid. Mine will do that when low.

It hasn't been leaking that I can tell but I'll check it

Sometimes, the modulator leaks internally and the engine vacuum sucks the fluid in and burns it. End result equals low fluid and no visible leaks.

The fluid level thing is just something to check before paying for a tow. Usually, TH350s are pretty darn reliable and don't just fail quickly. Usually...

Never had one do that but I'd check the fluid for sure. Mine just got rebuilt for $550. You'll spend a good bit more swapping in a 700, but I'd say with the added mileage you'll get paid back over time...especially when gas goes up again.

OK.. dealio..

Fluid levels were good..

I got quoted $875 (parts and labor) + Tax to drop in a reman'd TH350 with a 1 year warranty.

I'd like to do a transmission with an overdrive (700R4) but can't find anyone in Atlanta that will do it. DIY is not an option right now. If any of you Atlanta folks know someone that can do it or can do it yourself I'm willing to pay and am not in a huge hurry.

You can't find anyone that will rebuild a 700R4 or someone that will swap it out for you?

Go to the junkyard. A used 700R4 should cost about $150 bucks. Then find a shop to rebuild it and you can swap it out in your driveway. Someone else will chime in with the exact parts you will need for the swap.

I found the thread that included parts needed but DIY is not feasible for me right now. I'm more than willing to pay someone who can do the swap, I just have to find that person/business

I had a TH350 done by Phoenixtrans.com (in Texas). They did a little more for me by adding a lockup torque converter so I get no slippage when I'm rollin down the highway. Talk to Greg Ducato (the owner) - you can tell him I sent you if you like.

A passing gear cable that's stuck out will do the same thing as will a sheared govenor shaft. Both are easy fixes.

$875 seems high. A re-build kit is under $150 & a mech that knows what he is doing can have it out, re-built & installed in around 4-5 hrs. Shop around some of the older shops that have seen alot of TH350,s & i bet you can get it done for $500 or so.

$875 was the labor also though (installation etc..)

I've got a plan now though. Truck is sitting in my D/W and I'm going with a 700R4 hopefully
