Let it snow, let it snow...LET IT SNOW! (Mods, I put this thread in the welcome area as well). If this is the wrong place to post a thread like this could someone suggest to me where to put it to get the most exposure?

Happy Holidays everyone! Newbie here but not new to the 67-72 era of Chevrolet trucks. I’ve been in love with them since childhood because my dad had a 68 K-10 stepside (with a 69 nose my favorite still today), light blue and white. I had the opportunity to restore a nice truck, but just didn’t have the time and sold that and the C10 fleetside truck I had (bought the C-10 for the cab mostly). I was only 18 or so. I’ve regretted it for years. So here’s why I’m here…

I purchased a 67 GMC complete chassis 4x4 with a straight 6. It’s definitely the shortwheel base ½ ton. I live in New England and this chassis is in good shape. Frame has surface rust but has NO rot anywhere. It can easily be sandblasted and look new. The full powertrain is still intact including engine, tranny, transfer case, and front and rear end. Breaklines, brakes and front hubs all seem to be in decent shape. There is no linkage for either the tranny or transfer case. I haven’t had a chance to research this specific truck (67 GMC 4x4) because I can’t find much info on them. I will check to see if the frame has a plate on the front frame to specify exactly what the truck is, but if it doesn’t how can I find out the following:

Were all 67 GMC 4x4s a 4 speed on the floor?
Would the 4x4s come standard with the 4.8L 292 engine?
Does it have high and lo?
How would I find out what gears were standard in this truck?
Any suggestions for a good shop/repair manual?

Sorry for such a long post but I’m really excited about this project and I really want to know everything about this truck before I begin the restore!

Early GMC's are tough to decipher, more so than Chevy's because they had options the Chevy's did not and fewer were made.

To address your questions:

1. No 4x4 autos were produced prior to 1970, I believe the standard tranny would have been a 3 speed on the column, with the 4 speed granny low an option

2. GMC's had I6's, V6's and V8's whereas Chevys did not have the V6 options. A 292 would have been an optional I6, the 250 the standard one. What does your VIN start with? KS = I6, KM = V6, KE = V8, though GMC VINS are weird so yours may not start with any of these letters.

3. If original, Should be a Rockwell Xfer case with Hi and low range. It sould also have close knuckle front end drums.

4. I'm guessing on a SWB 1/2 ton, 3:73 would be standard, 4:10 optional.

I'm a Pats fan too, but this weekend I'm a Jets fan.

I will make a few guesses for you here. First, i would say you could get different trans combos.
Second, i am pretty sure the 292 was not the standard engine. I am not sure if the 250 or V-6 may have been.
Third, should have hi and lo.
Fourth, i "think" standard gears would be around 3:54
Shop repair manual i would try to find an original.
Most of this is just opinion. The early 4x4s did some different things and then a gmc to boot makes it tougher. Welcome to the board, i am sure someone will know more about this. Eric

Thanks for the welcome Eric. From what I understand the previous owner told me this was a 4 speed on the floor with the granny gear, I was just curious if this was standard equipment back then. Once I look at the engine again I'll know exactly what it is. The engine mount for the 292 would be on the passenger side(at least this is what my research on the internet told me).

Well, of course I'm routing for the Jets to win! Dude, nice trucks. I probably won't have hands on this chassis until after new years. I will definintely take pics once it's delivered.

Being in NH I would think those trucks would be rot boxes. Glad to see you take care of your toys!

There is a quick visual to tell the 250 from the 292. Something to do with the fuel pump, but i can't remember what it is. If you go on e-bay, i see a few 67 gmc manuals pretty reasonable from time to time. I picked up a nice one for my collection for less than $15 shipped.

The 250 engine mounts will be straight across from each other.The 292 are offset.The side covers for the lifters are 250=4 in
292=6in.
GMC's are harder to decifer because according to legend the records were lost in a fire.

chevy had inline six engines gmc had v6 engines the chevy 292 engines and engine parts are hard too find look at the side covers on the side of the engine also the 292 is taller than the 250,230,194 engines i am from CONN

Here is my 67 GMC SWB 4x4 when I first hauled it home. It is currently under a frame up rebuild. This GMC had the v-6 and 4-speed on the floor. Axle gear ratio is 354. I swapped out the v-6 engine crossmember for a v-8 one installed a small block 400 and changed the trans to a turbo 400-205 transfer case set up. Really no big deal at all for the swap, just bolts right in. It will be another season or two before the resto is done. Good luck with yours. JOHN

My 68 K-10 had 3.73's but as stated, GMC did different stuff. I think that the older 4x4's did all have 4 speeds and no auto's....

I'm glad you say 4 speeds were common. That's what most people have also stated. I have a pretty good feeling I have a 4 speed and a 292 but I'll be glad to know for sure. See ya man!

GMC's were a different animal, up thru the eartly to mid-60's. They did there own thing. 67 was the first year IIRC that both were made on same assembly lines, but it was not until 69 or 70 that they truely became badge engineered, sharing same components excepit Grilles and badges.

Damn Jets. Oh well 11-5 with your #2 QB isn't bad, Indy went 12-4 on Manning's arm, but probably would have been 4-12 with their backup QB. MGross, guess I'm no longer welcome in your home?

It will also have a rockwell transfer case which works but is stated to be noisy and difficult to find parts for. NP205 is a popular swap for guys...

I know where there is a 292-4speed-NP205 combo in the junkyard but it wouldn't be easy to get out and something might be broken in it...

Hopefully Brady isn't using his downtime to impregnate any more ladies...
