So I tore the 396 down and this is what I found
First the bad...
Cam was flat and the the shavings from that caused the main bearings to go bad...... The good news. Actually the very good news. I ran the numbers on the heads and they are the one of the rarest heads GM ever made. They were 1965 425HP 396 Corvette only heads they also used them 100 of the Z16 chevelle cars. Long story short I have a big fat check and the heads are on the way to Arizona. The engine block is also very rare... I don't want to spill the beans on it until the check arrives. Sure glad I didn't trade that car for that truck.

Re: So I tore the 396 down and this is what I found
Yes sir! I have heard of other people finding this stuff, never me. I'm the one who usually has to pay the high prices for stuff.
Over the years I have restored 2 corvettes and several other vehicles and to do it correct you have to find this stuff. Considering they only made 2000 of these cars back in 65 its a hard part to find. the last set of these heads went for $7,000. However, they were removed in 65 and still looked new. The only other set currently for sale are in Detroit

Re: So I tore the 396 down and this is what I found
WOW! Congrats! Did the block and heads not actually "go together" or were they worth more separate? I'm afraid when it comes to engine $ values, and as to what can be mixed and maxed, I'm somewhat clueless

Re: So I tore the 396 down and this is what I found
Kevin, the Lord has blessed you, again! What a find! Good thing you posed that question and rode the emotional roller coaster, huh? You lived to get off of the ride and then didn't puke the big hot dog you ate before you got on. What a Christmas surprise.
I'm sure the new owner is as happy as a pig in mud at having located such a plum.
