New Tire Dilemma for 3/4 ton with camper.

Okay folks,

I need to get new tires for my 71 GMC and I'm torn between getting new rims and radials (16" rims) or continuing with the bias ply 9.5 X 16.5. I will be using the truck with the camper (11 ft) so I need a high load range (D or E) and the 9.5's X 16.5's have always done a great job but I was told by the tire guy that the bias ply are not going to be made after 2010. Also, I'm afraid that since the bias ply tires are not too popular that I will be buying old tires. Anyway, what have some of you done in this situation.

Thanks!

My suggestion would be to buy a set of late model 3/4 ton 16 inch rally wheels off Craigslist. I've always run 10 ply tires on my trucks with 16 inch wheels and never had a problem finding them.

I'd go with 16" rims as well. Lot easier to find 16" tires and they're usually cheaper. I had 16.5" rims on a '72 C-20, I was able to find radials but they were almost twice as much as 16" tires and a special order to boot.

I would have to agree. I tried to get the 16.5 and they were twice as expensive. You should be able to get a set of cheap 16 inch chevy rims (vans or trucks) for little or nothing with a little bit of searching.

16 inch rims with 235/85 load range E rubber and you're set!

I have 265/75/R16 Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo's on my camper-haulin' rig. These are "E" rated tires and I have no qualms at all with these tires. Pricey, yes, but worth every penny. I go back and forth to Texas every year and these have been the best tires I have yet to run on this truck.

Go to 16", no question. I've got 16x6 from American Racing with 255-75 for 8 month driving. In firewood and snow season, I run Hayes 16x6 steelies on the rear with 255-75 10 ply rubber.
