Re: been thinkin bout gettin some wheels...
Before wheels you should covert to 5-lug and 4 wheel power disc brakes and probably drop it 3/5(your truck would look great then). It will save you a lot of trouble in the long and short run.

Re: been thinkin bout gettin some wheels...
You can buy 6 lug front disc brake kits too, so keep that idea for an option.

Re: been thinkin bout gettin some wheels...
I loved it when someone would walk up to my old truck, to be completely suprised to see disc brakes front and rear.
Then the questions would start. I like the look of 6 lug Torque Thrust II wheels(I currently have a set). There are so many 6 lugs available now with the 99-up chevy, nissan Titan/Armada, etc it is very easy to find wheels. Last edited by Hard On Parts; 12-28-2008 at 04:18 PM. |

Re: been thinkin bout gettin some wheels...
Well, asking for opinions on a board this large will get you alot of opinions.
You have to figure out what you are wanting. I have 5 different sets of 6 lug wheels and love how they all look. A good rebuild on drums should work fine and that would keep the costs down, but if you like the look and added power of discs this conversion is the easiest one ever. It all comes back to what you want, what you can afford and what you are comfortable doing. |

Re: been thinkin bout gettin some wheels...
what would be the advantages of 6 lug pattern???....outside of not having to buy disc brakes up front first..
im 16 on a budget dont currently have a job outside of doing hay in the summer and other odd jobs,,selling ATVS (buy fix up sell for a few hundred more than i paid for it).... but id like to have some other wheels besides the ole ralllys...bad thing is the rallys are new and have like...500 miles on them!!....id rahter sell the ATV i have currently before i buy new truck wheels....

Re: been thinkin bout gettin some wheels...
If I were you I would: 5-lug/4wheel power discs, 3/5 static drop, 18x8F - 20x10R Torque Thrust 2's with 245/60F and 315/60R. Remember, thats just my opinion, it's your truck, do whatever you like with it, because everyone's taste is different.
I do hay to! But of course, I live on a farm, and my "odd jobs" are things like building a barn in a week. I'm not pickin on ya.

Re: been thinkin bout gettin some wheels...
Good thing you are asking all this BEFORE buying the wheels. Keep in mind if you change the front end over to 5 lug disc setup you will also need to change over the rear end to keep them matching. More expense. You can buy aftermarket 5 lug axles and drums for the rear but that will add more cost to it. If you change to 5 lug disc front end you also need another master cylinder and prop valve. Sort of snowballing isn't it?
My suggestion is do LOTS of reading on this forum about suspension systems, brake upgrades, lowering kits and so forth so to get a good idea of just what you want it to look and drive like. There are plenty of threads of pics of these trucks sitting all kinds of ways from up to down with accompanying info on the specifics of their setup. Many of us choose to buy the suspension parts and rear ends from the 71 and up models to get the 5 lug setup then buy the lowering springs or spindles, etc to get the desired ride height. I hope this is of help to you.

Re: been thinkin bout gettin some wheels...
Sounds good, you could also get just the 71-72 axles and swap em in. I believe there are no fitment problems because you dont have a 67. And IIRC the 71-72 front end bolts right in and all you have to do is brake lines and brake booster/master cylinder.

Re: been thinkin bout gettin some wheels...
He's got a 68. The rear axles ARE NOT a bolt in. The 5 lug trucks are wider by 1.5 inches overall. This change started with the last half of the 70 production year. The only 6 lug rear that can have the axle swap are the late 70 models.

Do the 6 lug disc up front, drop spindles, and rear springs then buy your rims.

Re: been thinkin bout gettin some wheels...
You misunderstood. I was referring to tito's post. He said you should swap the axles into your truck. You can't do that on a 68. You can however, swap a complete 71-72 rearend into your truck. Just not the axles alone.
And, tito is spending your money pretty freely there with the 4 wheel disc brakes and big wheels. It's real simple, you have 3 options... (1) rebuild your present 6 lug drums front and rear and run 6 lug wheels (2) swap to a 6 lug front disc brake kit and leave the rearend alone and run 6 lug wheels (3) convert to 5 lug front and rear and run 5 lug wheels They are listed in ascending order of expense. You can rebuild your whole drum brake system completely for under 200 dollars and be good to go with whatever 6 lug wheels you choose. Ya gotta ask yourself how much ($) you really want 5 lug wheels and go from there. I'd rebuild my stock brakes and get a set of 6 lug wheels that I liked. Then, when the money became available down the road, I'd convert to 6 lug disc in the front. This way you get nice safe brakes and pretty wheels right now, and better brakes later when you can afford them. Drum brakes work fine when serviced properly.

Tx Firefighter, I said "I believe," As in "I'm not sure, but I think so." You dont have to hold me to everything I say. I knew if someone saw it and knew it was wrong they would correct me. And you did, but please dont make it seem like I said "THIS IS RIGHT."
