SEMA Cash for Clunkers Alert

Dear Fellow Enthusiast,

As a SEMA Member Company, we have received an Urgent Legislative Action Alert from the association. You may be interested in this legislative alert and the possible impact it will have on your hobby.

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) is a non-profit trade association composed of more than 6,800 member companies involved in all aspects of the automotive industry, from manufacturers to car clubs and race teams.

The SEMA Action Network (SAN) protects your hobby from unfair or unnecessary legislation on national and local levels. Through distribution of information and the collective voice of automotive enthusiasts and businesses, the SEMA Action Network has successfully impacted legislation concerning scrappage laws, equipment standards, registration classifications, emissions regulations, and more.

The following information is directly from SEMA. If you would like to contact the lawmaker, follow the instructions in the alert.

Oppose Federal

Washington lawmakers are drafting a large economic stimulus package to help create jobs and rebuild infrastructure. They want to include a nationwide scrappage program which would give U.S. tax dollars to consumers who turn-in older cars to have them crushed, as a misguided attempt to spur new car sales. The lawmakers need to scrap this idea.

The stimulus package is being drafted right now. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wants to introduce the bill on January 6 and have it approved by Congress by January 20, so that President Obama can sign it into law after he is inaugurated.

Contact House Speaker Nancy Pelosi IMMEDIATELY To Oppose Cash for Clunkers!
Call: 202-225-0100
Click here to send an electronic message: http://speaker.house.gov/contact/

Talking Points
Feel free to use any of the statements below as a starting point for your message to Speaker Pelosi.

* I am [calling/writing] to urge lawmakers not to include a “Cash for Clunkers” provision in the economic stimulus bill. Owners who turn in vehicles for crushing would receive a "minimal" payment to purchase a new car. This is a misguided attempt to spur car sales and claim that the country’s air quality or fleet fuel mileage is being improved.

* I work for [company name] located in [city and state]. My company is part of the specialty automotive industry, an industry which enables consumers to enhance their vehicle’s appearance, performance, comfort, convenience and safety. “Cash for Clunkers” programs deny our small businesses the availability of older cars necessary to develop and market their products and services. The programs will hurt my company and our customers.

* “Cash for Clunkers” programs threaten enthusiasts nationwide with the loss of valuable parts and parts-cars for repair, restoration, and customization projects. The programs also risk destroying classic, historic and special-interest vehicles, our American heritage.

* Cars turned in for scrappage often barely run, or are rarely-driven second or third vehicles that have a minimal impact on overall fuel economy or emissions.

* “Cash for Clunkers” programs will reduce the availability of affordable transportation and repair parts used by low-income drivers. It will also compete with the Salvation Army, the Purple Heart and other charities that rely on vehicle donations to raise money.

* “Cash for Clunkers” ignores better policy options. If Congress wants to act, support for repair and upgrade is a better choice and a win-win for consumers, dealers, manufacturers and repair shops. Significant emissions and fuel economy improvements can be achieved in older vehicles through relatively simple and inexpensive means: repaired/replaced exhaust systems, tune-ups, etc.

* We hope we can count on you to reject “Cash for Clunkers.” Thank you for your consideration on this very important matter.

If you choose to send a message to Speaker Pelosi, please send a copy of your message to SEMA also:

Re: SEMA Cash for Clunkers Alert

Not sure if you all are aware of this but China has been buying as much US scrap metal as they can in the last few years. Similar to what Japan did just before WWII. I wonder how this bill is connected to international relations with China? Not wanting to start any poop, just a talking point.

Re: SEMA Cash for Clunkers Alert

Just a heads uo guys an gals in my experience in these things ( a member of SEMA also ) your email msgs are not nearly as effective as a PHONE call to ALL concerned from your local authorities to your State reps and finally to Plousy her own self, they can ignore an email but a phone call they must respond to and remember be courtious to the person on the other end we need to let them know and understand how this for many is an income and consequentially taxes and votes not to mention the hundreds of thousands of us out here that support and enjoy a FAMILY oriented pursuit! I'll step down off the box now.

There isn't enough metal left on old Fords to recycle. Ricers? - There's hardly any metal to begin with!

Re: SEMA Cash for Clunkers Alert

This same kind of thing comes up every year or two... not saying it needs ignored, just saying that it is the norm.
In the mid 90's, CHEVRON started doing this in so-cal to "ballance out" the fact that there refinerys were not up to smog code. Now all the oil companies do it over there.
China wasn't buying much scrap, they were buying up all the NEW iron and steel and ore, they only got a little scrap. Our scrap prices went up becouse WE were buying scrap iron to build with. However, China has all but stopped buying it, and our scrap prices have gone back down to a level where your copper pipes are not going to be ripped out of your house for scrap value.

Make the calls and send e-mails, every little bit helps. If you belong to any kind of auto club, get there voices heard too.
They have been trying to do this at a federal level since the 80's, so the fact of the matter is, they've been trying for 20+ years and it has never been passed. However, one day, it will, and with the way they have it worded now (create jobs) it is a bit more of a realistic scare than ever before.

Re: SEMA Cash for Clunkers Alert

Well just my two cents but the big three have alot of muscle and if it will help them this will probably pass most people are scared about the economy and right now if people tell them we need to sell ice cubes to people in the antarctic they will try it most have not seen any bad economic times. So i think i better sent a note to my rep about this this will not do anything but help the big three not the lil man. If they want to help the economy get rollin then give the 700 billion to the people split it up among households to pay on bills and mortage only unless you have no mortage then make the banks refinance the lowered amount owed for at the same or lower interest rate to help people reduce debt so they can spend money again and the banks still get the 700 billion the only difference is THE PEOPLE who got it in the backside while the bankers, realtors, and builders got rich will get something in return just my two cents. 30,000 per house hold would reduce a mortage 300.00 per month

Re: SEMA Cash for Clunkers Alert

Sent my e-mail with a copy to Sema. The scrappage program in California was the oil companies trying to get credit for eliminating industrial waste by buying these "high polluter" cars and getting them off the road, instead of cleaning up their plants/refineries. The first go round all they ended up with was everbodys junk from the back yard that was used up. The second time around they had a requirement that it had to be running. People still outfoxed the oil companies by towing cars down to the location, unloading them a block away and driving them up to the gate. It was a lousy idea and did not work out well in California. The oil companies gave up on it and it has not been used for over 20 years. All the Government has to do is look at that miserable failed excercise and realise it does not work.
