2wd 4wd automatically switching while driving stuck
So my 2006 GMC 1500 has a pushbutton electronic t-case. Sometimes I will be driving down the road and it will switch automatically into the 4wheel auto setting. It did this a day or so ago on a long road trip. Now when its in 2wd It clicks at around 55mph and up. If I put it in back in 4 auto the clicking will go away. Any help would be great. Thanks ahead of time -J

Re: 2wd 4wd automatically switching while driving stuck
how many miles are on it with it being an 06 might still be a warranty on it

Re: 2wd 4wd automatically switching while driving stuck
If under warranty, I'd just take it in.
It may be the dash switch malfunctioning. GM has issues with the dash switches having soldered joints breaking/coming loose. They're about $50-60 off ebay or about $58 from GMpartsdirect.com. Is your "service 4wd" light coming on?

Re: 2wd 4wd automatically switching while driving stuck
No the light is not on. But it no longer (nuetral light on the switch) lights up when in nuetral and when I try to put it in four low it just slaps and goes back into 2hi. -J edit: also I have around 80K on 'er so no chance of warranty.

Re: 2wd 4wd automatically switching while driving stuck
On my 05 z71 it would pop into 4low but only when I would put it in reverse. It ended up being a bad "encoder motor" but mine was fixed under warranty.

Re: 2wd 4wd automatically switching while driving stuck
I have had my 05 Tahoe in the shop 3 times for the TC... I always get "service 4WD" and then the buttons don't work. If I shut the truck off and then restart it works fine. Just did it again the other day while backing up and in AUTO...
I think chevy has major issues with this piece of crap and i'm now out of warranty... Should have kept my Ram with manual TC lever... good luck...

Re: 2wd 4wd automatically switching while driving stuck
I thought GM started the 5yr/100k warr around this time. I remeber this because my stepdad bought a 04 and like 6 months later he saw a commercial at my house about "GM's new 5yr/100k powertrain warr" (or however they said it). It wouldn't hurt to double check. Even if it ins't, you might be able to pump the service advisor out of some info?????????

GM started the 5yr/100K mile warranty in 2007 and it only applied to all 2007+ trucks and the 2007 "classic" Silverado. http://www.autoblog.com/2006/09/06/g...100-000-miles/

Re: 2wd 4wd automatically switching while driving stuck
Yeah apparantly it's not covered by warranty and the good news is they say the T-Case is shot. I'm not sure what it cost to rebuild one but the stupid chevy house said it was 1700 in parts and wasn't worth rebuilding. I should just buy a new one. Common guys who has thrashed a t-case in one of these trucks I need some prices. So I know if I'm getting raped or not. Thanks -J
Also yes I will get a second opinion this week.

Re: 2wd 4wd automatically switching while driving stuck
Did they actually look at it or just guess at it? Talk to a transmission shop, this is something they should handle. I may be wrong, but I believe he is talking about the switches in the dash to actually change it into 4wd. If is like some of the newer GM circuit boards (like the AC control heads), It might just be shot. You could also buy the transfer case from someone like Scoggins Dickey ( www.sdparts.com. New GM T-Cases come with a 2ry/24k warr (parts and labor).
Here is a backstory on the circuit board comment: My wife drives a 99 Malibu, the AC control head has failed 6 times. Twice under warr. My wife's right side taillight circuit board has failed once. My 98 GMC AC control head has failed 3 times, twice under warr. My 98 GMC taillight circuit boards have failed (very, very common) My stepmoms's 99 Tahoe AC control head has failed 4 times, once under warr Also her tailight circuit boards have failed. All of these are built the same with very cheesy construction.

Re: 2wd 4wd automatically switching while driving stuck
^Thanks, I'm 99% sure that's whats wrong with my truck. It still functions when I need it to (it's not switching the transfer case on its own, if it was, I would swap it immediately, mine just doesn't shift sometimes when I want it to, when it does that, I shut it off and restart it and it works), so I'm holding out a little longer, I just spent a bunch of $ on my 67 and 4wd isn't a necessity in SC

Re: 2wd 4wd automatically switching while driving stuck
Probably the encoder sensor that tells it what gear it is in. However if its been poppin in and out of 4wd cause of it the case is probably trashed. If your rebuilding one with GM parts you can buy a reman far cheaper and a junkyard unit even cheaper than that. I've had a few failed transfer cases do like yours but usually they just slip or fall into neutral and don't wanna move...
67chevyredneck, your problem is the dash switch which is very common for the year of your truck. The later models had the encoder sensor issues. Josh
