GMC & Chevy Longhorns

alright guys i know both are out there i'm trying to find out the difference between the badges on both versions? were both labled as longhorns or was the gmc version called the custom camper? if so where do the badges go. i bought my truck from a guy who put the chevy longhorn badges on it but the truck is a gmc not a chevy and the longhorn badges were put in the place where they would be for a 68 not a 69. i've had it for 5 years now but am just now getting to making it more accurate for the fact that the truck is in great shape. here's some pics please feel free to tear it up! its the yellow truck with the South Dakota Plates.

Re: GMC & Chevy Longhorns

The GMC Version was not labeled as a Longhorn, nor a custom camper. The only way you could tell was by the extra 8" on the bed and the option code number.
Don't remember the numer, will check my pics.

Re: GMC & Chevy Longhorns

This is Andy's specialty, but I'll take a stab at this. GMC Longhorns did NOT have the Longhorn emblems as they were not labeled as such. I do believe they were called a custom camper, which would include the door scripts above the door handles for that package. Hope this helps and I'll wait for Andy or someone else with more knowledge to chime in.

I was under the impression that the extension was 6 inches, not 8.

Hi,welcome from Mt.Airy,MD.I don`t think the Custom Camper scripts are reproduced.Watch the parts board for members selling or search elsewhere.I see them pop up and have gathered some.

Re: GMC & Chevy Longhorns

YES, Longhorns both GMC and Chevy have a extra six inches of bed to make it a 8 1/2 feet long bed.
Not to undo anybody but my GMC Longhorn has Custom Camper on both doors and my glove box sticker reflects the option.
The Longhorn badges were in different spots for 1968. Correct me if I am wrong, They were mounted on the Chevy's above the rear side bed, red lamps. 1969-72 the badges were mounted on the rear sides bed in front of the side red markers. My Sierra Grande badges mount just like the 69-72 badges.
Andy will tell ya that allot of GMC information was lost by GM and allot of things are not known for sure, but Andy will tell you what he can and you can reference his Longhorn web sight that is in his postings all over this websight. I hope this helps you some. Andy educated me on my truck. Enjoy the Longhorn.

Re: GMC & Chevy Longhorns

I have a '69 GMC Longhorn that is not labeled as a Longhorn OR as a custom camper... I think you're right that there should not be any Longhorn logo's on a GMC. Why advertise? They were work trucks that are just cool as hell now. Let's get some pic's of some loaded Longhorns. I've had about 3300 lbs in mine and it wasn't even breathing hard. The rear bump stops have dust on them because if they ever touched, I'd probably have a small PLANET in the bed!

Re: GMC & Chevy Longhorns

Custom Camper is its own GMC option. Can be had on other wheelbase trucks other than what we tag by the Chevy name Longhorn. As mentioned, the only way to know on the GMC is seeing the extra bed length or the option code on the SPID. No other special labels.

Re: GMC & Chevy Longhorns

Well fellows - mine is quite a salvation project as well. Looks pretty rough for starters - but it has no significant rust or big dents and the drive train and most other mechanicals are strong (402 bb and 4 speed). It will take a while, but it should come out well. Anyone have a suggestion about best places to get bed wood and spacer rails? Any help will be appreciated. CCCC

Re: GMC & Chevy Longhorns

i've been on a road trip... been gone for a little over a week.
Most of the questions have been covered....
yes, records were lost.
As far as the badging... I have seen quite a few GMC Custom Campers with the 8.5 foot bed, but did NOT have the option package, nor the seperate options listed to support the package. Seeing this, I am lead to believe that some had the badging, and others did not. it could have been a supply thing, an assembly plant thing, it could have been the ever chainging memos from corperate, it could have been confusion on the assembly line. No telling.
I would say inspect your doors real close. inside and out. if you see evedence of holes, then start looking for the badges. if none were ever there, then that's one less thing to buy in your restoration.
Personally, my 70 chevy longhorn, which is made up to look 100% like a GMC, I put Longhorn badges on it.

I have a 71' GMC Custom Camper and I only have a 8ft bed. No one has messed with this truck either because it has been in the family since its original purchase in 1970.

Re: GMC & Chevy Longhorns

buford... this is where the GMC Custom Camper gets confusing.
Custom Camper was an option package that included HD shocks, HD or overload springs, certian tires, and a sway bar.
CustomCamper was also a truck model with an 8 1/2 foot bed.
Your truck is just a normal long wheel base, and is not related to the longhorn model of trucks.

Andy, welcome back from the road trip. I think that it is time to put the badging to rest, going to hit the books this evening.
