I am looking at purchasing one of these trucks for a distant future project. No motor and hasnt been driven in a long time. Looks clean, wont be paying over a grand. Was just wondering how common they are? Is a nice look w/the big glass.

Re: 66,short,wide,big window..rare?

I saw a SWB BBW today on the way home from snow play. I pulled over to check it out. It had a Utility bed on it and no glass seat or interior. But everything else seem to be there. They were asking $1800 for it, I thought that was too much for what was there, or wasn't there for that matter.

Re: 66,short,wide,big window..rare?

This one has no motor ,as stated ,and is missing tailgate and drivers glass.LOoks to have been repainted. Its a mess but looks fairly straight and doors line up decent. I always look for a good cab n doors and straight bedsides, which is next to impossible to find,Most Ive seen for sale have a wavey roof or a twisted frame.

Re: 66,short,wide,big window..rare?

Anyone else have any facts on these options? Going tomorrow to pay the man,900. I know there arent any photos but I feel like its a fair price,if indeed it is a rare find. Tomorrow Im getting it ready to load up and Thur. I'm taking it. I'll get some photos then. Its a done deal ,I'm just wondering about the rarity. Thanks for any insight.

They are rare, but you can find them if you look hard enough. The price doesnt sound bad, just check for the usaual rust spots.

Re: 66,short,wide,big window..rare?

Thanks.I was thinking it was unusual to find all those 3 things in one truck. Mostely rare around Texas,at least one thats worth buying. Every for sale 60-72 for under 5K Ive ever looked at,up close, has been eaten up w/rust and/or beat up so that it wasnt worth the trouble even if given to me. In comparison this one is nice, which I guess really isnt saying much ,,but Im getting it anyway. Thanks fellers ,for your input. ~T.

Re: 66,short,wide,big window..rare?

Nice. I considered a LWB but the ones I viewed were crap, and owner was still asking around 3K. I am super picky, thats part of the problem.I wanted a cleaned rustic body and straight frame so I could do a rustic streetrod.
Sounds like you got a nice set.

900.00 sounds like a pretty fair deal if the cab, doors and bedsides are good. I am supper picky myself and can't see buying a bunch of rust. There are good trucks out there. Good luck with the project.

Re: 66,short,wide,big window..rare?

Inverter:

It sounds like a good find. Although the production numbers of the '66 Chevy C10 swb fleetside truck were rather high (published at 57,386), it is unknown how many came with the big back window factory option. Additionally, if the truck was equipped with a 283 or 327 V8 and/or a 2-speed automatic Powerglide or a 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic and/or factory A/C, factory power-assist steering and/or factory power brakes, it even more rare, thus more desireable and expensive.

In my travels, I have found that the swb fleetside trucks with the big back window were usually fairly well-optioned trucks, thus more expensive when new and more rare than the other body styles and wheel base choices.

One way to determine whether the truck in question was a factory V8, automatic or equipped with some of the more desireable options, is by checking the factory build sheet on the backside of the glove box door, behind the seat springs of the backrest of the seat behind the driver position, as well as, the original invoice or dealer write-up. You can also check the lower radiator craddles, to determine if the truck was equipped with a V8 radiator by the location...if they are on the lower portion of the radiator crossmember, between the frame rails, it was most likely a six cylinder truck...if the craddles are on top of the radiator crossmember, it was was most likely a V8 truck, although this is not fool-proof, because some six cylinder trucks came with the larger 3-core or 4-core, Desert Cooler, radiator.

Also, one tell-tale sign of an automatic transmission equipped truck is the automatic shift linkage stand-off on the inside of the driver side frame rail adjacent to the transmission body location, as well as, the factory automatic transmission cross-member and the low hump tranny cover. Keep in mind the low hump tranny cover also came as factory equipment on the three-on-the-tree manual transmission equipped trucks. The high hump transmission covers were factory equipment on the SM420 granny-low 4-speed manual transmissions.

I hope this information is helpful and it sounds like you have made a wise decision on purchasing the '66 Chevy C10 swb fleetside big back window truck. Good luck and don't forget to post early and often...especially photos, lots of photos.

Re: 66,short,wide,big window..rare?

my swb is bbw factory 283 with the original engine that has been overhauled i dont think it was factory ac but im not sure i know the truck has had ac on it because some of the parts are on it but all the trim is there and it has a turbo 350 now but did have a power glide i payed 2k for mine but it was in a garage and looked like it was in way better shape than it really is but it has been converted to 5 lug and power steering and power disk breaks so i dont think i got ripped but not a good deal at the same time here it is the day i bought it it was sitting in that garage for 10+ years but the rockers are solid filler and need floor pans well pretty much the entire bottom of the cab needs replaced

Truck looks like a good starting point for what I wanna do,especially for the price. It has rust like any other but no holes You can never be sure till you dig into it but looks like a decent find.Pics tomorrow.

I don't know how "rare" it would be considered... the better word is "DESIREABLE". Nothing sweeter than an early 60's big window setting down nice and low!

I have a 66 waiting for some of my "time"! My luck, I will be stuck driving my 96 extended cab for the next ten years!

I tell everyone :If your plans are to keep it,Change the crossmember. Its just the ultimate upgrade. You've got a nice shortbox, whatever you decide.

Nathan, thats a much better word. I feel the same. When I saw it w/that large back window and that little bit of rust comming through the oxidized paint.....I just had to have her. Theres a nice 60-66 thread on the H.A.M.B. w/some slammed n hammered BBW 10's.

Lower production numbers constitutes rare...personal choice constitutes desireable. R.P.O. A-10, Full-View Rear Window, was a pricy upgrade option, compared to the total cost of the truck, so it was more rare than the small back window.

What would someone pay for that option in 1966?
When I was a kid, there were few shortbeds compared to long. I didnt know a BBW even existed till a year ago. Was just wondering if I had stumbled across something unique. Im working on collecting one SWB from each of the body style year ranges that I find attractive. So far I have a 68,98,04 year models.Tomorrow I will have one of the 60-66 styles and then I just need a square body. IMO there isnt a GM truck beyond 2006 that doesnt hurt my eyes, but thats another thread.....
