Re: New Alternator

Do you still have a voltage regulator (have not converted to internal reg yet)? If so, replace it too

EDIT***********

Never mind...I am blind apparently, I now clearly see you said voltage regulator...

I second Krue, have the parts store check the alternator.

Re: New Alternator

If you bought it from a chain store it may just be a bad alternator.

True.. I got a bad alternator AND a bad voltage regualtor some years back.

Question: Are you checking the voltage across the battery connection to see if the alternator is charging?

My gauge was messed up for a while and it wouldn't show it was charging. It turned out to be a grounding issue.

Make sure all your grounds are good -engine to frame, radiator support to battery, etc...

Re: New Alternator

Battery is not getting charged from several NEW alternators i've tried. so the first thing i will check is the ground. The guy before me never used the ground on the alternator, nor the two prong plug that goes in the back of the alternator. he had them folded & taped down. I have no earthly reason why. it was running fine but now its a pain in my derriere! i've spent enuff money on this & makes me wanna get rid of it

Re: New Alternator

check the truck tech FAQ board and you will find the internal regulated alt conversion, and you should be able to determine what the problem is. A very worthwhile upgrade and should help with your issues as well...

Re: New Alternator

I had this happen....got a bad alt and a bad reg the same day. I got pissed and checked into the thread in the FAQ about upgrading to a Silverado Alt and eliminating the reg. Did that the very next day and never looked back.

Re: New Alternator

One of the best upgrades for sure. Definately put a internally regulated alt. on there and all will be good again.

Is it still like this? If so, that is your problem. The regulator may be plugged into its connector, but it is not connected to the alternator. One of those wires "turns it on" and the other goes to the gauge on the dash. If you just have the "output" wire going to the battery, you will get nothing.

Re: New Alternator

yup plus one need to connect the alt. to the harness. Otherwise you will not charge the batt. Actually i don't think anything electrical in the truck will run for long untill the batt. goes dead for good. Sounds like thats the fix for now.

Re: New Alternator

If you start it and undo the batt does it stay running? If not hook up the plug in for the alt. and try it again. If it does thats the issue. You may need a new batt. anyway though.

Re: New Alternator

That two prong plug is what creates the electrical field for the alternator to cut and create electricity. It needs a source to get the generation started. You may be able to draw some info from the website below.
