Re: how to swap engines without hoist?

I wouldn't recommend it. Doing that will turn a few hour job into a days long nightmare. You would have to take the engine apart and separate the trans to get the weight down enough to even lift it. Go to a tool rental place and rent a engine hoist for a weekend, or even find a strong aframe and hook a come along to it if you have to. Get everything loose pick up the engine and trans in one piece and roll the truck to get it out.

Re: how to swap engines without hoist?

i think you can buy a hoist for like $99 now. Would be enough to lift a small block. After you are done you could sell it for $50 and if it takes you a week it will be cheaper then renting one. Orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr See if there is a board member near by that might have one that can help you out.

Re: how to swap engines without hoist?

Now just how buff are you
Its all fun and games until you get to the block itself unless its stripped too but its still no fun..
Id try as Tim suggested, but i would find an oak tree then maybe if it did break you may not suffer as long

Re: how to swap engines without hoist?

Do you have a friend with a tractor with a loader or a fork lift?

I've used all methods available except the disassemble and remove piece by piece that don't soud like too much fun

A fork lift or loader tractor is an extremly versitile shop tool

Re: how to swap engines without hoist?

You might consider posting an ad on craigs list for a temporary use of an engine hoist. You never know, you may find a generous person in your area that likes to wrench and help others with their projects. I would loan you mine, but I am a long way from Ozark, AL.

Good luck and let us know what you do.

Re: how to swap engines without hoist?

1tractor
2 tree
3 one large post across your lumber rack crosswise under the rails at the middle One long large post over the back of the rack lengthwise, with the forward end under the crosswise post so as to create a boom.
Be sure the rack is well attached, once you hang a come along and motor off the high end, it is going to be under a lot of strain. I did a Lincoln 462 with trans this way, but my rack was really beefy.
obviously, something might break, so don't be under the motor.

Re: how to swap engines without hoist?

Two of my buddies did a smallblock into a '63 by bolting on the headers and lifting it in. They said id sucked and never try it. Another buddy and me took a 2.8 out of an S-10 with a ladder, a 2X6, and the golf bag strap from a golf cart. It worked and was really funny.

Re: how to swap engines without hoist?

Another suggestion is a "boom pole" on the back of a tractor. Used this method to pick up the frontend of a crusher bound vehicle to get the trailer under it.

I'm 150+ miles from you.

Re: how to swap engines without hoist?

Where is Ozark? Nevermind I looked it up and you're a few hours from here. If you have a tree with a stout limb within reach a chainfall hung from it does wonders. I've actually pulled the engine out of a Freightliner like this, but it was a huge oak and a large chainfall.

Re: how to swap engines without hoist?

I know you said outside but...

I used to do it this way before I got an engine hoist.

Scab a couple of 2X8's together and suspend them from the joists of a garage or basement. When it is time to lift something, put jack posts under each end, and use the old come-a-long.

On second thought, beg, borrow, or steal the engine hoist.

Re: how to swap engines without hoist?

I made a boom pole for my tractor using an engine hoist, I get the best of both worlds, I use the tractor controls for the heavy lifting and the handle for the fine tuning.
