Talking Why I Like My 700R4

Managed to snag this a little while back...upped the brightness/contrast so it's readable, my gauges aren't normally that bright (but the tach is considerably brighter)

Okay, it's a little hard to see, but that's 80mph at 2500RPM. With a 3.73 rear.

Okay, you convinced me. Actually, I've known all along that's what I wanted behind my 307, But I think its more important that I get enough sheet metal on the thing to keep me dry on days like this before I start tinkering for the fun of it. Maybe I'm wrong.

Just clamp it on behinde the shifter collar. (no overdrive...3.07 gear with 28 inch tire....I need more RPM for this motor, it bogs at this low an RPM)

Do I see 1500 RPM's at about 75MPH? Not too shabby. I, too, want to replace my TH400 with a T700. My transmission shop buddy says he can do the whole job, driven out the door, for about $1300, including all the peripherals AND a one-year warranty. How does this compare to your costs?

Oh, by the way, waaaaaaay back in late '70, one of the guys in my shop (I was stationed at DM) got clocked (and ticketed) for driving 137MPH on I-10 through Tucson. He was in a new '71 Mustang with the HO351 and a 4-speed, TRYING to catch his girlfriend who was in her '70 Eldorado! He paid the ticket ($350 in '70), and never let the USAF know about it....avoided the double-jeopardy that it would have brought. I don't know how many RPM's that engine was turning.

Project1970, she has plenty of motor...but it is a top end engine that is lazy below 2800 RPM. Once you hit that engine speed, she comes alive.
And with that said, this engine actually gets better gas mileage at higher RPMs. When it was in the old longhorn I would be spinning it 3000 every day on the highway...which was about 70-ish. I was gettting 14 MPG consistanlty...enter same engine/tranny into a smaller lighter truck with 3.07 gears...and my MPG goes into the crapper, normally into the single digits.
She needs more RPM.

I was going to get a 700R4 to replace the dying TH350 my truck had. It would have cost me about $1200 for the tranny and conversion. A bought a rebuilt TH350 and had it installed for a little over $500. The 700R4 would have taken many years to make up the extra $700 in fuel savings. I have 3.07 gears in it now, and it cruises 65 right at 2500 RPMs with a 27 inch tire. I have drove vehicles with the 700R4/4L60E, and while admit that the low first gear and OD is great, i didn't think they were worth the extra money, for my truck anyway.

My transmission was about $800 IIRC from PhoenixHardParts.com, including a shift kit, torque converter, and the core fee...add to that Red Line synthetic (nearly $100! ouch), a tranny cooler ($45), and a lot of miscellaneous parts, and $1300 installed sounds like a nice, very fair price, especially with a warranty like that. Just make sure the core is an '87-up version.
