i got laid off today at the hvac shop i was working out! i seem to have no luck even to get any place to want to give me a app let alone take my resume. what is a guy suppose to do?

it's not like i don't have skills.. ive worked in several body shops and i know how to paint etc.. .

Sorry to hear that. I know what you are going though. I was laid off from aircraft after Sept. 11 2001.There were no planes flying & airlines were canceling orders. No one hiring. & filling out Applications with the same info that is listed on a resume SUCKS. But stay positive. Things have their way of working out.

Hopefully the economy will turn around soon. Until then more and more folks will get laid off. I have a decent job but as the economy drags my chances of getting laid off increase weekly. Especially now that 90% of my work is being done in India!

Bummer, man. First thing is not to get discouraged. Keep looking.

I used to hire people many years ago.

Here's some things to know.

1. First, ask yourself this question. If I were a manager/owner of a company would I hire someone like me? Simple question, but most of us think very highly of ourselves but others may not see us the same way. We have to prove it to them.

2. First impressions are lasting impressions. You only have one chance to present yourself in the best possible way to a person that does the hiring. If you miss that opportunity, you may not get another.

3. Next, determine the lowest amount you would work for.

4. Are you mobile? A lot of jobs are elsewhere and you may have to move where the jobs are.

5. Be persistent in letting them know you would like to work for them.

Last, don't let your skills go to waste. Advertise yourself and even go so far as to have someone give you a chance even if it's for less than you are used to making.

Maybe even start you own business. A lot of people became successful when they found out there was no place else to go.

horrible position to be in,,,,where there is a will there is a way is what I believe. Go to any and every shop around your area dont speak to the employees always ask for the mgr alot of times employees will not handle your application in or your resume trust me I have seen it happen.

I feel your pain. My first thought was Whatever!! when I saw the title of your thread. I am going on three months now being laid off. I was a mechanical designer designing HVAC systems and Plumbing systems. Anything in the construction field seem to be really slow. I think I am about to go and apply with Wal-Mart or a auto parts store. At least the auto body field is doing ok with all the insurance collision work out there.

Not being able to find a job isn`t a matter of how one presents themselves,now.It`s a matter of there being no need to hire when business is slowed down.That,and the abundance of elegible candidates for a minimum of jobs.

I am lucky so far I am in the Hvac field also. Everybody at the shop is fighting for work orders right now. Right now we are getting 36 hours a week. Try to keep your head up. Summer will be here before you know it and our field will pick-up then, alwas has.

Sorry you have been laid off and hope it's not to long a wait to get back to work.. I have been there and do know what it is like ..Hardly ever good,, as it gets you behind and then it's catch up time again,

Do you also work as repair man on heat pumps? My heat pump fan motor seems to not want to come on and run unless It gets a little nudge to get going .
Do these fans have a switch that goes bad and causes this or is it the motor its self that I will have to change out?

Not sure where in Nebraska you are but here in Norht Dakota the unemployment rate stands right now at just over 2.8%. Just about everywhere you go there are help wanted signs, espesially out in the western part with the oil fields. It is a mite colder than Nebraska though (you have to either be nuts or just plain stupid to live here) it is about -15 here now headed for -20 by morning with a high of maybe +7 tomorrow

know your a body man but the television industry is thriving ...seems mpre people are staying home watching tv than other things with money tight ..plus the pay is great if you with a good company

I believe you! I have never met anyone from N. Dakota and this is the first correspondence I have ever seen come out of the state

GOOD LUCK in your job search. in the meantime just try and find ways to supplement your unemployment benefits

Look at your Monster type job search. Take a look at a company called Flour-Daniels. They are out of Greenville NC and right now they are looking for supervisory types for the next rash of power plant sites to start. The wages are touted to be quite high ($100,000 or more with experience) with a good perdeim, for just going to NC, then it will increase when you go to the job site. Texas looks as if it will be the first to start up and build--with a 4 to 6 year term. Carpenter, electrical, steelworker, millwright, pipefitter, and so on ---HVAC

well i've had pretty good luck so far at least i got a couple of interviews i hear back about two today. just don't do the ads in the paper. i just hit the shops i would like to work!! and some that i didn't..

so i hope others can take my advice and maybe they get a job ...even if it not the job they want.. it's a pay check.

sounds like bad brushes in the motor? but i don't know it's not right in front of me.. there is some websites that do trouble shooting for ya for free just this great pickup site!

That's great! I just talked to a friend of mine, at his body shop. He is looking for people to do body work and he stated that there are no quailfied people out there. Amazing, no jobs and people looking in one area, but no people with jobs available in another. He is in real need, due to the guys at his shop not getting their work done. He needs to rotate them out of the shop.

at the risk of jinxing things i will say the automotive repair industry is looking healthy. I feel for those who are not as fortunate. which reminds me, prariewolf (Kent) not only got laid off but his co. went belly-up. if you are reading this bud I am including you in my prayers. if there is anything i can do let me know.

I am sure have got this fixed by now but I just saw this. On you fan motor As olds said may be the brushes or it could be the capacitor. They are not that expensive. It sould be a 5mfd/370 volt or a 7.5mfd/370 volt.

I figure you have had it looked at already being it is 7 days since you asked the qestion but if not there you go.

nope i just go where there is work! my new boss love the fact i can do more than just body work.

i also get to play with all engines etc.... i'm stoked!!
