okay my roommates dad has a 97 s-10 with 4.3 vortex. anyway his temp gage does not work hasn't worked in about a year problem started after ti blew the water pump gasket and over heated. we tried a new sending unit did not fix the problem. tested the gage by grounding the wire and it peged red hot doing this. emp gage just sits on cold any ideas where to look next?

Are you sure you replaced the correct sending unit? Not saying I know for sure, but I have worked on several that had more than one temp sending unit.

replaced the one in the side of the driver side head. grounded the wire going to that unit and Gage pegged red hot

96 and 97 engines have the sensor near the thermostat. 98 and new have it in head.

shop key says it is in the head and i dont see one around the t-stat

Ive heard that there are two also. One for the gage & one for the computer. I have a 96 that took out the pump at one time & my gage reads cold all the time even after a different cluster.

I did some work on a guage cluster yesterday. Fuel guage wasn't workng, after further investigation, I found it had a bad connection on the circuit board. Fixed that and it worked.

My temp gauge go's way up, but the truck doesn't seem to be running that hot.

Was thread tape used on the sender? If so, that could be causing the new sender not to have a path to ground.

I have a very simular prob. in my 93 (with 95 motor) my temp gauge stoped working i replaced the temp gauge by the tstat did not change. here is the stange part if i pulll the fuse the temp gauge works and all other gauges die.?????

The sender by the tstat is the coolant temp sender for the fuel injection. It has two wires going to it. The temp sender for the gauge is in the side of the head.
When you pull the fuse you are opening the circuit, and will have infinite resistance. The gauge should go to hot. I would check the wire on the driver side head to make sure it is connected and not broken. You could check resistance in your sender with a DVOM. The reading should not be infinite, maybe a couple hundred ohms?? Ground to base, red to terminal.

Thats OK. Sometimes people will tape the treads with too much tape and there won't be a good ground.
