Re: Ice > snow!!!

p.s. knocked out power to 1.4 million people

somehow... businesses w/a generator boomed. there were six downed wires on my normal 30 minute walk with one dog. about 7 hours of yard cleanup (which the town still hasn't gotten) but it looks like I took posession of an entire maple tree. that should last a minute or two in the woodstove.

kind of surprised there aren't other members chiming in with pictures. guess they all rust up here
except mine. (obv dreaming)

We had a touch of ice last week and,as usual,we lost power. Our road always loses power and we get serviced last...really! A transformer blew across the road from white cedars loading up and drooping onto the lines.I thought I was going to have to put a fire out,but the flames died out.

Re: Ice > snow!!!

Cool photos!

Just wondering, does anyone else "feel" the truck rusting when you see pictures like this? After replacing/removing all the rust from my truck, I freak when I see a puddle in the street.

My house NEVER loses power (knock on wood) It's been here for 150 years, so I kind of assume that the infrastructure for the rest of the township runs through my yard. The ice for the whole city of Troy DID come from my back yard for a number of years, a number of years ago (oviously).

There was only one REALLY unlucky house in my vincinity. My neighbors John and Carolyn were without power for about 6 days... I could hear their gas geni non-stop.

Thanks!

pffft! the cab supports, floor, cab corners (all of them), door bottoms, rockers... all rusted through.

I'll let you know when I start considering a whole cab-floor. my truck floorpan will be rhino lined inside and out when the rust is all gone. I think the only reason they ever rusted was because of all that cushy carpet to hold the water in. When I rhino lined my '70, it just shrugged off winter crap from my boots. Hell, I even climb up and stand on the hood to get the snow off the truck. It IS still a truck, after all.

Re: Ice > snow!!!

AAAAAH living in California. It was about eight o'clock on one December evening, the Christmas lights are aglow (so are the eyes of our wiener dog). It was almost 60 degrees as I was outside taking apart the motor I just picked up. But it gets cold here the other night it was almost 30.

Re: Ice > snow!!!

you must be a hippy
jk jk

2 hours to clear the driveway this morning... and I can't even THINK about touching truck parts. One could say that my mental state suffers for these reasons for some months of the year. If I were to ATTEMPT a repair or modification, I would pretty much get frostbite in minutes. Our high temps are in the teens this week, which means all my truck parts are all frozen metal life-suckers. Trust me... you don't want to touch a 20lb lump of 0* cast iron or steel or what-have-you.

Re: Ice > snow!!!

My house and yours are the same age...1857 for mine.I`m in the sticks and my road is the county line.So usually the dairy farmer up the road plows to get the milk truck in on the big snows.I like the big snows because I can drive around my backroads without fear of salt.
My`72 Cheyenne Super was sitting out in Jan`95 when we had a few freezing rain storms in a row.It never reached above freezing for the whole month of January.I had to chop foot steps to my mailbox and woodshed.Work was at a standstill for a few weeks. There was about an inch of ice most of the month. It was like a glacier on my truck. When it thawed paint was lifted at all masked edges and chips,The ice coming off the top took out a mirror and the antennea. It started downhill from there so I parked it until I restored it.Never happened.I stripped the chrome and paint, treated the surace rust and shot sealing primer aand that`s how it sold.
When we went back on the jobsite a guy parked a van next to my truck.A guy comes up and tells me the van is against my truck. The van owner gets in and we push it sideways off my truck while he backed it out.Two guys died when their ladders slipped out and they hit the ground from 10'(ladder jacks & plank.Gimme snow anyday.

Re: Ice > snow!!!

RIGHT?!?!? One of my clients actually wanted me to put up an extension ladder during the onset of the ice-storm! You must be at some ellevation Special-K, because this kind of weather I always associate with PA-north. As far as I can tell, there are 4 deaths from the ice storm I posted pictures of. wiki page for storm: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decembe...state_New_York

Sounds like you probably have a 1857 farm house, yes? I have a 1852 greek revival (plus some horrible additions, and some nice additions) I'd love to see some pics of your house! I'm a carpenter, and I get a pretty big kick of seeing ohw it used to be done. For me... I don't even like to LOOK at a hand saw!

I actually don't have salt in my neighborhood either (because of the water in the back yard), so I have quite a bit of fun stomping about when nobody else can get out of their driveway

Re: Ice > snow!!!

Ice is pretty, until limbs start coming down and poer goes out.It doesn`t always go that way.
Yeah,my place was built in 1857 by a freed slave. It`s a 2 story log house with an addition out the back that was post and beam on the 1st floor and sawmill studs upstairs. It`s neat to see the phases through the years.I`ve gone over the whole thing trying to keep the character.BTW,I`m a woodpecker too.
I`ve sidetracked enough. But,I`d be glad to get you pictures of the place.

Re: Ice > snow!!!

I worked on a 1/2 post and beam, 1/2 traditional framed lake house last winter. I'd like to build one for myself someday (post & beam + log exterior)

my Greek revival:

that post and beam I reworked:

do you have a link to pictures?
