I am going to attempt to shave my cowl this week, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips or a link to a decent write up on the process. I do have a spare cowl in case I really mess it up. I know about all of the heat/warping issues. My concern is how to get the compound curves into the panel. The cowl slopes down towards the sides of the truck, and it curves up toward the windshield. I messed around a little with making the filler panel, but everytime I would get the panel curved correctly in one direction it would pop out or crease when I tried to form it in the other direction.

Scotts hot rods makes formed patch panels to insert, but they're not cheap because of the work involved.

Im plannin on doin mine with fiberglass. I'll prob make a solid piece at the back then glass in the holes. I'll finish it with a very light coat of filler........

Instead of making a solid piece patch panel for each opening, make two or three smaller, easier to bend and manipulate panels to fill it in. It is also better (when possible) to weld the panels in while the cowl is bolted securely on the truck because it will help keep it from twisting or warping on a large scale while welding. I did one once off the truck and it turned out great, but when I went to bolt it back in, it was twisted just enough that there was metal tension that I was not comfortable with once it was installed.

Wow that is nice work! I have a ? for you though. Where do you get the fresh air at now when the vent's inside the truck are open. Could you cut opening below the hood line and let air in.
I had a old cowl that was louvered like my hood but it cracked and I left it off this last time I redid the truck. The body guy said it wasn't worth fixing. I should have saved it and played with it myself.

I have a question.When did filling become shaving?Shaving is removing/smoothing body protrusions and parts like door handles.It has to stick out to be shaved,right?I guess smoothing covers both.

Fresh air???? Open a window! Sure beats all of the leaves and junk that causes the lower corners to rust out! I shaved my inner vents as well!

I bought one already done, kinda pricey but I wanted a total shave

(Mine's GLASS, has NO vents and NO wiper holes either)

I understand the debri issue but that is taken care of with screen or the grille to go inside the cowl. I have the screen inside mine

My cowl is fiberglass and I got it from Tony Gonzalez ( mgtp001@gmail.com )

Great fit and a lot less hassle... throw some paint on it and bolt it down.

Only hard part I found is removing the wiper arms as you can't really use the cowl to help work them off. But other than that, piece of cake.

Thanks for all of the input given so far. Seeing the pictures brings me to ask if people are just welding flat panels in place of the vents, or are they actually forming the metal to match the contoures. I want to make the patch(probably in a few sections), and make sure that it will fit in perfect before I even weld it in. I just get the feeling that if you tack it down, and the pry the patch in to get it tacked a couple inches further down, you are adding a lot of tension into the panel.

Maybe we could have Rokcawlin to do a write up for us on how to make the patch and install it. I know he also filled the vent of Project LEMON DROP. I am watching his posts and websites just hoping that he will eventually put out some discs so we can watch him do his magic and hopefully learn from him. He has been my inspiration to me to not be afraid, and just jump into sheetmetal work. I have been doind fairly well so far, but throwing that compound curve in from the cowl is moving into an area that I have not tackled yet.
