Ok then ,,What about air filters for a good brand

I am bringing this up because of the Popular K & N air Filters that a lot of cars and trucks have .
I had a set up with once myself .. And thought it was great..I didnt have any way to tell if it was great ,,but lots of people told me it was..
I guess they are known to give you more horse power ,,but a Machanic told me that the reason they do give you more horse power is that they let more air through..
And he said they let a lot of particles get through too.. And thats what a good filter is supposed to keep out.

What say all of you ?

I've heard they keep MORE particles out and let MORE air in. There are coated/filled with oil, to catch dirt.

Yes, I have heard that too. If you go of roading alot you can get the pre filter to instal over it. AEM Dryflows are also nice filters, and don't require oiling like the K&N

if they were so good, over the road HD semi trucks would run them. More power, better MPG, true, but they let dirt in your engine wearing out the engine faster.

I have ran a K&N in my truck, wifes caddy for years now. I haven't ever herd of this until now. The truck has gotten over 200,000 on it and it's never let me down. The caddy has 150,000 on it.

Re: Ok then ,,What about air filters for a good brand

K&N filters are designed for racing. As mentioned, they allow alot of air,but don`t do the best job of filtering.AFE is a much more effective high-flo filter.Figure, with a race car particulate induction is not as much of a concern as major airflow. They`d run with no filter but want the motor to finish the race.So a K&N gets the job done.Race motors aren`t asked to yield hundreds of thousands of miles and are torn down and rebuilt frequently due to the nature of thier purpose. Most drag cars don`t even run a filter.

There are other brands, too.Amsoil makes good filters.I just googled AFE filters and that`ll get you good info. All this said,I run K&Ns in some vehicles.I think it`s down to splitting hairs.I suggedt you look for test comparisons and go from there.

Re: Ok then ,,What about air filters for a good brand

I don't have performance engines per say, but I run K&N's on all three of my vehicles more due to cost. I can buy one K&N for ~$40 that lasts the life of the car (plus a recharge kit that lasts forever), or buy 8-10 regular filters over the life of the car. One thing about the K&N's is that they actually do a better job once they are a little dirty. I have had excellent results and have never had a vehicle issue due to air (or oil for that matter) filters. My engines always outlast my vehicles (of course, the 72 is still running on the original engine, so it remains to be seen). Once again though, I don't have any "high performance" engines.

Re: Ok then ,,What about air filters for a good brand

I run K&N on all of my trucks and my wife's Impala SS. I have no vehicle in my garage with less than 170,000 miles and I have not seen any issue with extra engine wear. As a matter of fact, my DD Silverado is just passing 270,000 on the 5.7 and is running great. I like the idea of cleaning the filter and going on with a quality product, but to each his own thinking. The filters that I use, do get dirty since I live in a Kansas rural area, but they are easy to clean and I see no traces of dirt in the carbs or the throttle bodies. As for engine wear, I use a quality oil and change at a regular period of around 4000 miles per vehicle. Once again to each his own and that is my .02 worth.

Re: Ok then ,,What about air filters for a good brand

If you drive lots of dirt roads or are in an area with occasional dust/sand storms, nothing beats the filter that came on some of our trucks--namely the oil bath unit. They do a great job and they will not load up and restrict intake air like the other types. A bit more work to clean though.
As for the other types, I don't worry about these, just get an AC or whatever.

Every independent test I have seen rates K&N near the bottom of their effectiveness list. NAPA gold and WIX seem to be at or near the top. I tried K&N for improved hp or mpg---got neither. For each his own.

No, they all have a reddish color to them because of the oil in the filter fibers . When you go to clean it and re-lube it, the fibers will be white. The filter oil is what traps the majority of the dirt particles, and makes them superior to conventional ones.

Re: Ok then ,,What about air filters for a good brand

My auto tech teacher told me they let in nothing but dirt and a guy with a cold air intake on his Z71 made one of them sensors on it cut on and stay on. I kinda dont know cause the teacher is the very best mechanic here in my town and works on a bunch of vehicles he worked at the dodge dealership here in my town for 5 or 10 years and left because of new management

Hmmm....cotton fibers saturated with oil vs. paper. Which do you think will trap more dirt?

Re: Ok then ,,What about air filters for a good brand

Check comparisons.Like I said, the differences may be irrelavent, but there are better filters for performanceAND filtration.K&N is just the most well known with the largest marketing program.Over the road trucks do use AFE for a lifetime filter.
It`s just like oil. There`s all these claims, but I`ve never had oil make a motor blow up.It`s great we have choices.
Hey 70 footer,AFEs are green if you like that color. Ain`t nothin`stayin`white once you put oil on it.Besides.White paper elements start off white. But,the nature of thier purpose takes care of changing that.

Kinda like nitrogen in tires ... the higher cost far outweighs the very small advantages

Re: Ok then ,,What about air filters for a good brand

I use to run what ever air filter the local Wal-Mart had, but now since I work at chain auto parts store I have switched to WIX.

Color makes no difference to me since I run the stock air cleaners on my two trucks.

Re: Ok then ,,What about air filters for a good brand

If you do not live in a dusty, dry area, don't spend your money on a K and N. There are far better ways to spend $50. I see the performance claims and I have to laugh....it's just an air filter!! You are not going to feel any difference in the performance of a vehicle. I didn't feel any performance gains running no air filter, unrestricted.....so how is putting an air filter on there going to change that? And if you have an open element air cleaner, I don't think it matters at all. I knew when I put it in my stock air cleaner the mild 350 wasn't going to start spinning tires. But I live in a dusty area, and I like the fact that the oil traps the dirt. I get tired of changing/buying air filters, and do not mind the maintainence of the K and N.

I know on SS396 Camaro taking the dual sporkle housing of and using an open element gains 15hp as proven in dyno tests. What`s a velocity stack used for?True, you may not see a difference just by pilling a filter off. But,you can tune it to take advantage of the extra air.Motors are air pumps.

Wix is also a great running filter as well. A little pricier than some of the other brands, but I have always had luck with them.
