longbed stepside in the 73-87 year?

i had never seen such a beast until i saw one parked in a field the other day ... i've been googling for about an hour and a half to see about production numbers and whatnot, and can't find any ... anyone have any statistics on these? i'm way curious ... they may not be the prettiest trucks, but i happen to have an eye for these oddball creatures, kinda like my 68 C10 longstepper ... any info???

Road commission trucks. I know they made them at least until 1980.

I work next to a Coca Cola distributor. They have one in their yard. Seems to be a mid 80's model. If I had a camera on me I'd go out and take a pic to post. I remember seeing a few in the Nevada DOT fleet too.

I hear a lot about these being state/company vehicles ? Any particular reason for that vs a regular fleetside ?

To keep people from overloading them. Also keeps the gravel from being trapped in front of the wheel wells, but still lets you carry 8' road sign/fence posts.

Re: longbed stepside in the 73-87 year?

The guy boatpuller is thinking about it los-lowrider. His is bagged and pretty sweet looking.

There's another guy named Shamil who has one, but doesn't post much. He's in Jordan, I think.

There's one for sale up the street at a nursery, and it's the only 2wd long step I can recall ever seeing.

Wish I had production info for you, but I'm afraid I don't.

Re: longbed stepside in the 73-87 year?

never knew they offered a long step in a 3/4 thats kinda neat. My buddy thought his 78 was a 3/4 ton, but it had 5 lug, so it was a half ton with a 305 2bbl i believe, light duty too, so nothing special.

Re: longbed stepside in the 73-87 year?

Here's one down the road from me. It's a 3/4 ton, 4x4, lwb stepper. Somebody told me it might have a Dana 60 front, but I really have no idea. Odd to say the least so I snapped a pic.

Re: longbed stepside in the 73-87 year?

It's pretty trashed, not sure about the frame. These guys scrapped several last year and I snagged a perfect crew cab rear bench but most of them looked like this:

YIKES

Oh yeah, Walts if you want to come get it (the long stepper) he'd probably give you a case of beer to haul it of . And you'd have to stop by and let me brag on my trucks.

Re: longbed stepside in the 73-87 year?

I don't know about production numbers on them, but they have to be pretty rare. I have only seen two of them around here that I can recall. Both were 3/4 ton 4x4s, one a GMC, and the other a Chevrolet. When I was a kid and we still lived out on the farm, one of our neighbors bought a brand new '79 GMC Sierra Grande. It was a 3/4 ton 4x4, and was very well optioned. It was red with a white top.

The other one that I have seen in person belonged to a guy in The Ozark Mountain 4x4 Club based in Springfield Mo. by the name of Randy Schweke. Randy's was a 1980 Chevrolet 3/4 ton 4x4 Custom Deluxe that he called Stomper. This one is yellow in color, not sure if it was the original color or not, because at the time I never thought to ask. His had a 454/TH400 combo in it.

I have some pictures of it, but I don't have a scanner, or I'd post them up. It had something like 15 inches of lift and 44s on it. I've got some really cool pics of Randy doing a burnout with it. I haven't seen Randy around in quite a while, so I don't know if he even still has his truck any more or not. If I happen to see him again I'll be sure and ask if he still has the truck. Maybe I can snap some pics with my digital camera for you if he does. ...Joe

Re: longbed stepside in the 73-87 year?

I've noticed a few of these in the past, but just recently saw one locally, so I was relieved to see some recent interest and a readily available knowledge base when I went Google-ing. I enjoy camping and love the look of a stepside, so I can't help but think of how cool one of these things could be in a crew cab with an Avion camper on the back headed for a rural retreat. I've found a few of these on CL ranging from $650-$2,500 depending on condition, and I've also found a bed only for sale for $375. Some of these trucks are optioned pretty well such as this '84 GMC for sale out of NJ, but in order to get way out in the boonies you'ld need lots of fuel which begs the question: Were dual tanks offered with the LWB stepside?

Re: longbed stepside in the 73-87 year?

Found one on Craigslist in OKC...

http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/cto/1190440704.html

"I bought this truck off the original owner. It was originally ordered by Haliburton back in the 80's(several) and was never picked up. The truck was bought by farmer who also used in some with his roofing business around Altus. After a few years it was parked and drove very little. 350 V8, turbo 400 trans, NO AC and radio delete. I got the truck a month ago and changed out the oil, plugs, wires, valve cover gasket, battery fuel filter, cleaned it up really good, changed out the back tires. Has trailer brake set up. Its rare that its a long step side in this model. A perfect candidate for a flat bed farm truck. Windshield good, good brakes, solid old truck that runs great."

Re: longbed stepside in the 73-87 year?

There is one a few miles from my house. It always catches my eye because of the long step side. It's the only one I've ever seen. The guy has rebuilt it, and it looks pretty good. It's a 73-78 truck, not sure exactly.

Re: longbed stepside in the 73-87 year?

My dad had one when I was a kid. It was a 2WD 3/4 ton with a 350 and a 3 on the tree. He bought it from someone who was selling of their fleet.

They had toolboxes that fit the bedsides after the fenders were removed. When the trucks wore out, they sold them with the unused fenders in the bed and moved the toolboxes to the new trucks. Unfortunately for Dad, he didn't notice that his had one Chevy and one Ford fender in the back.

I saw one for sale locally a couple of years ago. It was the same setup as my Dad's, but a different color. I would like to have had it.
