4.2 I6 Vortec

Has any one attempted or have ever planted one of these little power houses in the 60-66? If so do any of you have pictures of the finished product and your thoughts on the subject? Thanks

Re: 4.2 I6 Vortec

My son has a sweet running I6 in his Lexus IS300. I would like to steal it while he is here for the weekend, but I'm afraid he wouldn't help me take the door off tomorrow.
Those inlines can make a lot of power and have great torque.

Re: 4.2 I6 Vortec

Come on, you guys have gotta be kidding me! I figured I would have an overwelming responce to this one. How sweet would it be to pull up to the light with a vortec I6 and blow some stangs off the line.

guess most people think if you are going to all that trouble, might as well do ahead with the LSx swap

I think it would be a really cool swap. With that being said, go ahead and take "the road less traveled"...and be sure to post lots of pics.

Hmmm... yes but you did ask what our thoughts were on the subject..
I think it would be an ok swap but i was just agreeing with Joe for the simple fact of since you had to do the same work you could have just a little bigger engine thats all..

Re: 4.2 I6 Vortec

I think it would depend on the out put of the engine. I don't know much about the vortec I6. I think just the uncommon factor makes it cool though.

Re: 4.2 I6 Vortec

Bigger isn't always better. What about those old Offy inliners, or the fabled Cosworth motors?

Those Vortecs are supposed to put out 270 lb-ft... Pretty peppy. Of course my 292 is supposed to be pushing the same.

If you go forward, check into the rumors about the cylinder sleeves loosening up.

Re: 4.2 I6 Vortec

No I dont have one yet, I use to have a trailblazer with the I6 and it had lots of power, and I wanted to do something different. I thought it would be a nice clean set-up. I checked on an engine and I can get the whole set-up for about 5 bills. If any of you have the chance to test drive one, with this engine in it, give it a try, the hp rating is at 275, like the LT1's

There's quite a few threads on inlinersdotorg, but you'd have to sign up to do a search. Lots of information if your serious enough to do the research. I'd like to see one done personally, but it's not the fastest way to get an engine.

NOT that I'm advocating for a swap, but the tuner-crowd gets some pretty serious numbers out of their small-displacement mills. For that matter, the current issue of Hot Rod Deluxe has a cool feature about squeezing maximum power out of a four-banger Ford flattie.

On that note, I've always though an Iron Duke would be a cool engine in a stripped-down short-wide.

I guess it's like the old saying goes, speed costs money. How fast do you wanna go?

Here a while Back, someone ran a turbocharged vortec I6 in a chevy II wagon and was knocking down low 9's in the quarter in one of Hot Rod Magazines events ( I think it was at their Pump Gas Drags). Anyway, here is a link to a vid of the car running on youtube

Re: 4.2 I6 Vortec

The thing with the those 4200 Vortecs is that they would have more power out the box than any small block V8 ever put in a truck until the 5.3L LSX engines. No stock 327 or 350 ever made the power the 4200's do. The Trailblazers they were designed for weigh in at 4300# and the later versions produce 285HP. One of my friends had one with the 270HP version, and it was stronger than any stock small block pickup made before 1996. I think it would be a interesting swap for an factory inline 6 truck. They come in Trailblazers with a 4L60E transmission, so that would be neat to have in a old truck as well.

In 4400# Trailblazers, the 4200 L6 is good for 15.5 seconds at 93 mph in the 1/4 with a 7.2 second 0-60 time. The 1993 454 SS trucks ran 15.8 at 90 in 1/4 mile (source: Motortrend, Jun ‘93) Something to think about huh?

Re: 4.2 I6 Vortec

You see some really interesting engine combos in the magazine, and that is a lot of the reason that I am such a loyal subscriber to it. The competitors in many of its events are very innovative and these effective oddball power combinations keep me reading.
