Question Steering Wheel Clearance

I just purchased a re-manufactured wheel for my '63 along with a new turn signal switch and upper bearing with horn wire.

When I go to put the steering wheel on, I'm having the same problem as I did with the old jank that was in there before; the back of the steering wheel hits the turn signal switch outer metal housing. Every time you turn the wheel, the two surfaces scrape.

I believe the outer metal housing is on correctly since it locks in place onto the column shaft tabs.

Has anyone experienced this or knows what the deal with this is?

Re: Steering Wheel Clearance

does it rub all around or just the top?
could be the lower bearing worn, causing the shaft to not be at the correct angle, parallel to the housing

Joe, Hopusing was a cook on Bonanza remember....

As Joe said check the bearing...Also it looks like that is a small dent in the housing where the turn signal lever goes through.

Re: Steering Wheel Clearance

Is it possible the shaft itself is not sticking out all the way?

How is the quality of the steering wheel? I was thinking about buying one for my '60...

Re: Steering Wheel Clearance

I only replaced the upper bearing, so the lower one (probably original) being bad or worn out makes sense that the shaft is not parallel. The steering wheel seems to rotate fine, so I'm going to live with it for now and just let the paint scrape off.

Regarding the quality of the wheel...I purchased it form Classic Industries and am impressed, considering half the re-manufactured stuff you purchase is crap. I matched it up to my cracked original one and the cast looks dead on.

Thanks Guys!

Re: Steering Wheel Clearance

It's been a while, but I recall an adjustment screw on the bottom of the steering column where the mast cover enters the turn signal housing.
By loosening the screw and moving it in the angled slot, you can move the bearing up or down the steering shaft.

Am I recalling that correctly?
Greg.

Re: Steering Wheel Clearance

Here is a picture of what I am talking about;

Loosen the screw, slide it either left or right, and you will move the upper bearing in or out.

Greg.
