Your theft protection setups
What do you fellows have on your trucks for theft protection?
The 72 Stepside rolled out this morning as my daily driver. I'm considering a kill switch, but I want to know what other folks are doing. Is anyone familiar with the "theft proof batteries" that came out a while back? Thanks, Tim Rich Kennesaw, GA

I had an alarm on mine, with door switches and a hood switch, also had a starter kill. It had the box behind the dash bezel so you couldn't get to it from the bottom. I made sure all the wires were up so they couldn't be seen at all. I even retaped the wire harness wit them in it. I didn't put the flashing LED on the truck so no one would know I had an alarm. Worked well, I had 2 people try to break in and both times they were scared away when it went off. I had an aux battery pack for the alarm in case they cut the power wire at the battery. I worked at a stereo shop so I put it in myself.

I hid a kill switch that was a black button that you have to reset after you shut it off..got it at radio shack years ago..

I had one of the Sears theft proof batteries. It was expensive and JUNK. It would just kill all my electric at random, on the highway, on steep hills, etc. I took it back and a few months later I got a recall letter because of all the problems they had. I don't think they make them anymore if they do...I don't recommend them.

Well I would guess a starter kill of some sort would be a good idea.
A alarm with a motion sensor for the inside of the cab (after all its easy to get in our 1/4 windows and for some the rear windows). Or I carry a Glock in a .45 flavor  ------------------ Life is good with a 6-71 supercharged 355 in a 72 camaro

If you have an electric fuel pump, that would
be a really good thing to install a kill switch on....very easy if you have it connectd to a relay.

i have an elecric fuel pump on my 71 i have a toggle switch for it on the dash, so i atached the switch on the metal behind the dash, i just reach under there and turn t off when i get into a parking lot, i think it would be funny to see someone jump into my truck and start it and go 5 feet and then it would kill, on the truck that i am building i'm gonna put some kind of battery cut off swith in a locked consoe or something

I have power door locks on mine that have built in theft protection. When you lock the doors with the remote control it disables the starter. If anyone tries to crank it even with the key it will blow the horn,and flash the lights.

How 'bout a lawn chair, a cooler of beer, and a winchester pump-action 12 guage model 1300 with 00 buck? How's that for theft prevention? Can anyone say "Crowd Pleaser"? LOL Seriously, I'm considering the kill switch and an alarm, and hidden hood release, but not power windows. I've got one kill switch, but I need to install another soon. My buddy's '69 almost got stolen...they found one of the switches...but they never found the other. The second will have to be some sort of a better-disguised one...

I have always found that having a truck too ugly to steal works best, that way you can leave the keys in it, and if it is stolen, it is their problem.

I PUT A KILL SWITCH INLINE, IN THE NUETRAL SAFTY SWITCH (PURPLE WIRE)& MOUNTED A TOGGLE SWITCH WAY UP UNDER THE DASH,ABOVE MY STEERING COLLUMB. TOTAL COST OF ABOUT $3. IT'LL SLOW EM DOWN SOME & THEIVES ALWAYS SEEM TO BE IN A HURRY.

I've got a toggle switch to my coil. That way, if the dude/ dudette is trying to hotwire it, maybe it'll just seem like it won't start 'cause it's a piece of junk, the person above who mentioned the electric fuel pump-- same idea. I wouldn't do the purple wire trick, too obvious (not that I'm a thief), but anything to slow 'em down.

I have an alarm with a starter kill, a club on the steering wheel and a club on the gas pedal. I also park with my front end all the way against the garage door so they can't get to the hood latch but I'm still not happy. Tomorrow I'm taking everything out of the garage and storing it at work so I can park it in there with my wife's car in front of it, hopfully that will work. I was told by a friend that if you take a battery with jumper cables and touch the bumper it will short out the alarm and could be towed, it happend to him.

I take my truck completely apart every night and stow it in tiny bins I bought at the Boeing Salvage Yard. In the morning I put it all back together.

I bought a 76 grand prix from a guy who used it as a daily driver to/from Chicago. On the way home, i was playing w/all the toys. Noticed that the hi-beam switch on floor didn't work. Got home, went to restart, didn't work. Called the guy, he used it as a cut-off for coil power. He claimed there were a couple of breakins but the car was always there. FWIW.....don t. ....

Was thinking of using a switch on the coil. Does anyone know how many amps the coil draws? Was thinking of using the old blower switch.

I have a Taser club. It is not working after my Daughter put it on wrong and broke the trigger. You attach it to the wheel and position it in front of the stereo. You use a key fob to arm it. If you get inside the proximity switch would sound a siren and if you persisted it started the Taser and small electrical bolts would arc across the brass connecters and Zap them at about 60-80,000 volts. It was a cool deterrent. They were made by Taser international in Scottsdale ,AZ . They do not make them any more and the part that is broken can be removed and I will try to repair it some day. It runs off of 6-8 9 volt batteries. I still use the club without the Zapper.

I never disable the starter as others have said. Thats an obvious way to tell the thief use a screwdriver across the terminals. slows them down what, <10sec.
I always disable the ignition, fuel, or both. The best circuit I came up with used a DPST latching relay and a switch. The switch ran the fuel pump wire through one set of the relay contacts and to the coil. The 2nd set of contacts always carried the fuel pump wire. So basically the switch turned on the coil part of the relay. When the switch was 'armed' if anything/anyone tried to start it the power to the fuel pump would trip the latching relay coil. because it traveled through the contacts prior to the coil the only way to reset it was to jump the relay with 12v. So it was like triggering a trap door.

I have a hidden kill switch/battery disable and a proximity sensor for the pushbutton starter (Digital Guard Dawg).

I keep stated value insurance on my truck and don't worry about it. If it gets stolen and not recoverd I'd go find another truck.
