POMONA Swap meet...60-66 pics and more...IT WAS HUGE !!!
I'm leaving San Jose this morning at about 10am, and driving the 5-6 hour trip down to Pomona.
One of my customers (the 67 father/son c-20 build topic) just scored a 6.0/4l80e combo out of an '03 Escalade. His son hurt himself on a dirtbike, so he asked me if I would like to ride, with all expenses paid....So I said cool !! We will be hitting up the Swap Meet on Sunday...just wondering if any of ya'll are going to be down there.... - -

Re: POMONA Swap meet...anyone gonna be there ??
Well, it's not pamona but I will be going to the Turlock swap next saturday. It's their largest swap meet of the year - makes the local Pleasanton Gready Guys swap meet look like a yard sale and the prices are MUCH better all around.

Re: POMONA Swap meet...anyone gonna be there ??
Well seeing it is now 4:25pm, I think it is a bit late. I checked in as much as I could before heading out to the garage and work on the truck a bit. Gunna do some work on it tomorrow also. I might head down to San Diego Next weekend though. Was going to go look at a paint place there and maybe take Luca to the San Diego Zoo and maybe even the Santa Monica Pier on the way home. A road trip for the boys..

Re: POMONA Swap meet...anyone gonna be there ??IT WAS HUGE !!!
We set off to Pomona last Saturday morning (10hr round trip) to fetch this bad boy. It just so happened that that weekend was the Pomona Swap Meet, which is said to be the largest/baddest show/swap there is in Cali...and it was !!
Here are a few (and I mean a few) of the cool rides we seen out there: - We arrived way before the sun, at 3:30 in the morning: - - - After these people moved...we got a shot of this nice 64 - - - - There were a lot of good deals to be found...like these all leather SUV rear seats..perfect for an old truck cab..(just don't ask where they came from)...this guy was best buddies with "Steve the Repo Man" - - - - This was and still is my favorite ride...I have own like 3 in the past...I sure miss them all...64 Impala 9-pass wagon: - - Not sure what Rahn was looking at...mabey the group of men....I do see the 10ply tires I should of bought with wheels...for my SuperDuty..mounted on alum wheels for $300...My current tires are balder than me !! -

Re: POMONA Swap meet...anyone gonna be there ??IT WAS HUGE !!!
This had to be one of the cleanest old Burbans I have seen:
- - - - Here, Mr Rahn is tired, but still all smiles as we are leaving the swap and headed to pick up the engine/tranny. We must of walked at least 5-8 miles that day. - - This truck was SICK !!!! - - - - - - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: POMONA Swap meet...anyone gonna be there ??IT WAS HUGE !!!
I think Rich was actually trying to get a pic of the truck on the trailer...
- - - - - - - Here it is the 2003 ESCALADE LQ9 and 4l80E transmission...low-mileage, and super clean !! Which picked this up for a SUPER DEAL...from a nice fellow named "Steve......Steve the REPO MAN !!!" - - Complete with uncut harness, fly-by-wire pedal, air-box, ECM, rear O2's, etc... - - - And me, tired as heck, gave Rich a break from driving and actually drove the speed limit to get us home fast ! - - This will be the next chapter in the "Father Son Build" -

Thanks for posting the photos! Believe it, or not, it was less than half the size of the swap meets just the year before. .

Re: POMONA Swap meet...anyone gonna be there ??IT WAS HUGE !!!
Rich here.....aka Mr. Rahn
John.....what's with the Mr. Rahn bit? You are making me feel real old. I took all the pictures. And yes, that 1948 Suburban was amazing.... And I was digging the Orange 440 Cuda, not that POS truck in the other picture. So, we get down there on Saturday and go straight to Steve's house to check out the motor. We pour over it to make sure it is an LQ9. Heads are 317, that is good, but not absolute. Might be an LQ4. So next we are removing sparkplugs and trying to peer in to see if the pistons are flattop. Remove one plug, can't see, Remove another plug, can't see either. Also using a small wooden dowel to trying to feel the piston top. Ended up removing 2 more plugs with John and me each taking turns peering into it. Is it flat? Meanwhile, Steve the repo man is getting pissed. He says, "I know you need to check it but I'm telling you it came out of 2003 Escalade. So after some time I say fine, it's a deal. We make arrangements to pick up it up Sunday around 1:00 after we do the swap meet. Later, we are at dinner and my phone rings. It's Steve and he is asking if we can pick him up and give him a lift into the swapmeet. See he is a vendor. So I say OK, 5 AM we'll pick you up. Best part, Steve offers to pay for preferrred parking AND for John and me to get in. Sweet! I gotta tell you, it was damn cold at 5 AM there. We found a concession stand that had a big gas grill burning and we stood next to it to warm up. It is pitch dark and the cars are just streaming in. Over in the vendors area people are walking around with flashlights trying to find a bargin before sunrise. Unreal. We decide we are walking all the vendor area 1st and then cross the street to see the cars for sale. I am looking for LS1 motor mounts and trans crossmember - No luck. John is looking for dynamat - no luck. In the end we never even finished walking all the aisles. Steve told us if we did it would be 14 miles! But I swear we did 5-6! Oh, and those nice looking seats, those boys were from Phoenix and did crack me up - They have pictures of vehicles the seats have been installed in, but in big writing a sign that says, "Don't ask what vehicle they come from, that don't matter" I thought really friendly these guys are. Around 11:30 I said to John let's head out. So we walk through the cars for sale area, and I take pictures. I am walking along snapping pictures left and right. For those of you who live back East and want a decent car or truck. Come to Pomoma. Go home happy. So we get to the truck and head over to Steve's place just 3 miles away. Now John and me get talking and agree wouldn't it be fun to pull a prank on Steve. We agree that at the right moment when I have the camera rolling John will tell Steve, "We are just not sure so we are gonna have to remove a head now" and watch his reaction. Well, John got a case of stage fright and the prank falls through. Maybe because Steve is like 6'3" and 275 lbs. We load that 6.0L into the truck that as it turns out only had a 4.8L, go figure. And blast out of there straight up the 210 to the 5 North. John did later show mercy on me and agree to drive. All in all, the weekend was a blast. John, you are a good guy and I'll do another roadtrip to SoCal with you anytime. Too bad my son Justin couldn't make it, but another time. John and me, we had plenty of road time to talk about the project and exactly how to execute the next phases of it. We are in sync. Stay tuned....... |
