What's wrong with this picture?



I finally ran out of excuses to not start tearing down my Panel. I got the front clip off today, and was able to get a decent picture of the Rube Goldberg alt/power steering pump bracket set up. This is how it was when I bought it, and since it does work, I never bothered to make it right. I mean, I know this ain't right, but I'm not sure how it is supposed to be. And the P/S pump is on the correct brackets, as far as I know, but it don't quite line up with the crank and water pump. It leans out to the front some. Anymore and it would probably throw the belt:





I don't evenknow if these are the correct PS pump and alternator.

I thought the power steering was always on bottom and alternator on top could be wrong though

I'm not trying to hijack the thread....................

When somebody figures out what causes the problem, please let me know.

The P/S on my big block did the same thing, and it's the factory set up. I got tired of flinging belts, so I just put a "suicide" knob on the steering wheel.

I just put p/s on my 71 inline.I got the pump and brkts off of a 80 van (local Pull-A-Part)and it was kinda tweaked like yours-the pump turned out to be bad so i got another from a 81 pickup and used the same bracket at the manifold as yours but used the pump brkt from the 81 and it was perfectly in line with each other.I'll see if I can get a pic to load tomorow,not wanting to upload tonight

Yeah, it's wierd. The bracket is bolted to block, and the pump is held to the bracket with the long bolt that goes through the right sized holes, so no adjustment.

Interesting, my factory BBC pump has a similar misalignment. I spaced the bracket out from the block with some flat washers and it's held on so far. Maybe that (mis)alignment is how some of these were made...

Before this, I couldn't imagine a P/S pump bracket bending. But my truck ran about 35 years without a problem, then it started kicking belts off.
Then I saw that misalignment & it was like WTF??????????
A friend of mine had the same problem with his '69, with a 350.

I'd just like to find out what the cause is before I start replacing parts.

Once again, I'm not trying to hijack; just hoping to find a solution to what seems to be our common problem

Try mounting the bracket from the alternator to the pump on the back side of the alternator instead of the front side. This may have the pump kicked out or try removing the spacer that is between the bracket and the pump and find a smaller one.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Years ago we found a p/s set up from a six cyl. car in a pick a part. I'm thinking we used pics from the assembly manual or one of the original service manuals to figure the mounting out and with the spacers the correct size and location it did track straight on the pulleys. But this was over 10 yrs. ago and I'm not positive which or if a combination of the two was used. They weren't real clear so it did take a little head scratching.

I had to do the same thing with my BB pump..washers to line it up.Glad to know I wasn't the only one ..

I noticed the pulley out of line right off in this picture too.

Hope this helps. I found this in the Chevy service manual series 10-30 1971.
Top left is showing power steering pump with alternator under it. You can do a save as on your computer and then blow it up to see it better. Hope it helps figure it out.
If you look at your 1st picture the bracket that goes to the P/S pump is bolted to the alternator bracket itself. This isn't how the factory shows it. It's bolted through the alternator bolt hole first and the bracket has a bend in it also where yours is straight.
