Exhausting

When I purchased my 72 short bed builder the guy was finishing a real nice 68, he told me when I get ready to run the exhaust to cut holes in the c-member and run the pipes through it, this would be better than having to dip them down to clear it, sounds like the right idea, has anyone done this and do you have any nice pic's Thanks for the help.
