Rear end question

I am under the impression from this forum that 5 lug axles from a 71 or 72 chevy cannot be swapped into a 70 or below housing because the lengths are different. Depending on when a '70 was made it may have the longer axles already.

Is the overall length of the rear end changed? If so, if a whole rear end is swapped is there anything different with the 71 or 72 rear end besides the fact that the rear end is a little wider?

Re: Rear end question

What you say is what I think. Some of these wizzards swap out and end up with wider housings then use a different backspacing for the wheels to compensate the length difference. One or more will chime in here. But them that have done this goter down pat.

Re: Rear end question

A late year 70 model may have the wider rear end. My Jimmy did and the 5 lug axles were the same width. Some people put the 5 lug axles in the narrow rear ends and run them, but I wouldn't.
