Help Please Altenator questions

I have a 72 fleetside, the engine is a 1994 LT1, runs good, I have not run it to break in the motor yet, (waiting for this cold snap to move on) but I have the altenator wired as follows, the alt. battery post going to the battery. then there is a harness on the Alt from the LT1 wire harness. this harness has 1 wire connected for the plug. What my worry is looking in the 72 service manualin the electrical Body and Chassis section I see a fused wire 14 gage Black and white wire that is spiced into the unfused power wire going to the fuse block. this wire that is fused if I'm seeing this right should this wire be connected to the B+ post wire thats on my Alt.?

and also do I have the Alt connected correctly with just the LT1 harness connector and the Battery wire connected to the batt. is this all I need?

I have not run the engine long enough to see if it charges the battery, also I dont know how to check that if I am to be honest about this all

Please help me out to understand what I need Please

Re: Help Please Altenator questions

Need to know what alt. you are using? Stock 72 externally regulated, internally regulated SI series or CS series. Also do you want your ampmeter to work or are you switching to voltmeter?

Re: Help Please Altenator questions

Crank the thruck up and put a volt meter on the battery anything over 12 volts it's charging.
Once you hook it up idle the truck up to around 2000RPM'S it should read about 14 volts maybe more if the battery is good.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Help Please Altenator questions

Get a old of Street and Performance. They can answer any question you have. They do these swaps all the time. I believe you can google them or try hotrodlane.cc. You can also look at their site they have the Lt-1 diagrams. That is how I did it on mine. but then I did you painless wiring for part of it. Thye answered any and all questions I had when I put the LT-1 in my 67 C10.

Re: Help Please Altenator questions

The 4 amp fused 18 ga. b/w wire should go to the ammeter. There is also a 18 ga. black wire for the ammeter. see diagram. They should have nothing to do with your charging circuit, they just read amount of chg or dis. Are these the wires you see in the 72 service manual? If not disregard.

Re: Help Please Altenator questions

so in the picture , the wire with the fuse closest to the fuse block, does that wire connect to the battery wire off the Alt? or does it plug into the LT1 Harness Alt Plug?

Re: Help Please Altenator questions

I dont know about the LT-1 harness but the two wires I marked go through the firewall connector and to the factory ammeter. I wouldn't hook them to anything else. Sorry not more help.

Re: Help Please Altenator questions

The fuse on the solid black wire goes to the positive battery terminal, basically; and the black wire with white stripe fuse wire will go where the positive wire from the alternator feeds into the rest of the harness, basically. How much of your truck's original wiring are you using? Where have you spliced the new/old together?

Re: Help Please Altenator questions

Thank you oldgold70C10, thank you very much, wow how I made that such a difficult questions to answer. Im using all the original wire harness of the 72. then there is the LT1 harness, it has 8 wires to connect, not too bad, but then there are a few like this fused black and white wire foir the Amp gage that I had questions about. Looking over and over in the service manual I thought that the BLK/W wire should go to the Pos. post off the Alt. but I wanted to double chack with you guys. the splice for the 2 harnesses was done either inside the cab or out side the cab in the Fuse Block
