reinstalling distributor

I am reinstalling the distributor because I put in an electronic ignition and had to shim the bottom gear. I marked the way it was installed and I marked the bottom gear before I took it off. When I replaced it I am either a little to the left and then the next time a little to the right. Like I am one tooth off could I have put the bottom gear on wrong and that is why it is not lining up?

I have put the distributor in over and over and can not get it to line up. Any suggestions?

Re: reinstalling distributor

I took bottom gear off again rotated it and put it back on . The distributor lined up the first time. I thought I had put the gear on exactly as I took it off but I quess not.

Thanks and sorry for the post.

Shine a light in there to look and see where the slot is on the oil pump. It may have gotten turned a bit upon removal. If so, use a screwdriver to turn it so it lines up with the slot on the bottom of the distributor.

Re: reinstalling distributor

Note that most gears have a little dimple on one side that should be aligned with the rotor when the gear is re-installed.

Came out of Rays Chevy Restoration site. This is a good site if you plan to rebuild your HEI. Has good info.
