I'm going to replace my gasket and thought I'd put a fresh filter in too.
Apparently there are a couple different styles of filters. screen type and felt.
What is better?

The gaskets had a couple of choices too. One was a rubberized cork (felpro) and one was just flat rubber (NAPA).
I'm looking for a good non-leaking seal, and the cork that's on it now seems to be seeping. (it looks alot thicker than the ones I've seen at the store)

Any suggestions/tips?

Most filters are now the felt looking type. They filter better than the fine screen. I recently started using the rubber gaskets on the trans pans. The cork ones can seep through the gasket and also if not tightened evenly, will leak. The rubber or hard paper ones work better. Just do not overtighten the rubber so it squeezes out past the pan sides. Tighten the bolts up snugly to the pan, then from the centers out give them about a 1/4 turn more. I use a stubby ratchet and just one hand on the final tightening. I usually stick the gasket to the pan and put grease on the sealing side to the transmission so it can be reused a few times.

I will, I think I have the torque spec somewhere.

Are you using anything on the pan to glue/seal it other than justcuz?

You're better off installing the gasket dry.

Over time, the metal around the bolt holes gets pulled up from overtightening. Take a ball peen hammer and peen the pan rail back down flat around the holes (I do this over a corner of the vise for support). With a flat pan rail, a dry gasket should seal up fine.
