ideas to clearance rear x-frame

Im a NFG here with a 62 X-frame and i want to get more clearance on the rear axle without doing getting too crazy on the cutting. my ideas are a piece of 4x4 channel steel and weld it under the frame where the above the axle. dont know if it would be strong enough and if i need to add steel to the sides like the c noch kits they sell for 63 and up trucks. any ideas. or pics? thanks
