Need some opinions.
Also I hate my name.
Anywho, me and my dad have a dispute over the interior of our 1968 GMC shortbox. It has crushed velvet interior, and I freaking love it. Dad however hates it. The one thing we agree on is that the seat needs something done to it. It looks like "Yeah I can sit and drive in that easy" But it ain't. You sink like half a MILE into that thing. I can't imagine what it would be like driving it like that, seeing as it's manual transmission... Is there anything we could do to BEEF it up so we don't sink, and still be comfortable? Now me, I would LOVE to keep the crushed velvet. To me, it's classy, and I grew up with it whenever I went to my grandpa and grandma's. Here are some shots. Also why the heck aren't the photos resizing for me? Dang they're huge. Sorry for any problems anyone might encounter. Last edited by InNeedofaDelorean; 01-28-2009 at 06:11 PM. |

Re: Need some opinions.
I like it, personally. I'm kinda oldschool. Not sure about beefing it up, I don't know much about interiors. Try photobucket for resizing your pics.

Re: Need some opinions.
But that's just it... It is on photobucket. Hopefully it's just my computer.
Some of the guys at my high school heard about this truck and always ask me about it... Or the '72... or my Trans Am... Or the Regal... But that's another story for another time. This truck gets looks whenever someone goes down our gravel road lol. |

Re: Need some opinions.
I dunno....I generally like the ol' school look. But I'm not wild about that. I think I would do something different. If you wanted to go old school, put some black diamond tucked vinyl in 'er. That'd be sweet.

Re: Need some opinions.
You could probably put new foam in it, sounds like the old stuff might be half gone. I personally would go with a vinyl , but that's me.

Re: Need some opinions.
I vote with your dad... Definitely old school and probably should be in a 50's type car or a low rider. It looks sorta foofy (is this a word?) for a truck. They should be more manly looking. Whoa! Is that too chauvinistic?
I'm old and brought up in the country, so I should be forgiven. But if you really like it and don't think other's will make fun.... well, you own 50% of it and it will keep your dad out of it... On the seat thing. Unless the seat has been changed, the 68's had springs on them and just a thin layer of foam on top. The springs probably can be replaced, but I just replaced mine with a seat out of an 86 quad cab. I'll probably either rebuild or try to get a newer stock seat that had the thick foam on them. |

Re: Need some opinions.
Well, just looked at your seat to the right side of the screen and it looks like they've been modernized, so as 68350 mentioned, probably new foam...

First off PM Josh or Liz and see if they will change your board name for you. I would run the interior until it needs replaced and use the bucks for something else for now. What do dads know anyway..... It sounds like the springs may be broken in the seat. If you can get your hand under it see if you can feel any broken springs or any springs at all. To fix it the seat will probably have to be taken out and the cover removed. While you have it that far apart you might as well put a new cover on it... See, dads are pretty smart aren't they... I think you have to manually resize the pics in photobucket I don't think it automatically does it. LockDoc

Re: Need some opinions.
hate the velvet
any local upholestery shop can firm up the seat and make up passable stock looking covers at a fraction of the "factory correct" resto pieces

Re: Need some opinions.
I would keep the seat and shove a piece of plywood between the springs and foam, but definately change that dash pad .

Re: Need some opinions.
The velvet would not be my choice. Me and my dad used to go round and round about most all this that pertained to my 1962 corvette high school car. Finally he came around and told me " Boy, you aint real smart, but if that is what you want go ahead and do what ever you can afford" My high school car was usually just the way he liked it!

Re: Need some opinions.
Hmmm... I guess I probably will be going with the vinyl idea, just like my dad suggested.
But that won't stop me from keeping every single piece of velvet in there just in case I ever get to use it again... |

Re: Need some opinions.
I need a // That last post sounds EXACTLY like something I would have done when I was 35 years younger. My dad has been gone for more than 20 years, I was 30 when he passed. I will be having a conversation with my Mother or my wife and all of the sudden, I will sound just like my dad. I miss him still. I miss him fussing at me and miss being able to talk to him. Go hug your dad and tell him that its vinyl. But make sure to tell him you want to keep the velour!

Re: Need some opinions.
It's a '68 Buick Electra 225 seat. It's not made to soak up bumps like a truck seat.
Trucks need seats that will handle bumps, since the suspension doesn't. Buick seats didn't need to soak up bumps, because the bumps never made it past their suspension When I was 17, I didn't think about that. All I thought about was it would be cool to have an armrest. So, esentially, you are no smarter at 17 about this seat deal than I was at 17. I've had 23 years now to think about what seat to put in there instead. After you evaluate it for 23 years, you can change the seat again
