Bought an 84 K10!

I just bought a 84 K10 SWB 6.2/TH400! I am so excited. It is now my DD! I'll post pics/plans later this weekend. I am in love with this thing! The engine is in mint condition. Brake lights didn't work, checked, it needed a fuse. Needs a few things here and there. Needs corners and 2 wheel well patches. Has TONS of brand new parts.

I have to hit the brake pedal ALL THE WAY to the floor to stop, I didnt when we first got it, but you have to hit it further everytime. We are making a trip with it tomorrow, I need this answer ASAP!

It has stainless steel lines if that helps.

He wanted $2K and I paid $1600.

How long will it take to bleed them? Do I need anything "special?"

Not bad for a running diesel... nice toolbox.

Once again, Google to the rescue on brakes
http://www.google.com/search?q=how+t...ient=firefox-a

you're gonna need a buddy to help, bottle of brake fluid, small wrench... It doesn't hurt to spray some PB blaster on the bleed valves a day prior... If you twist one off then you're screwed, you'll have to buy new calipers or wheel cylinders (which aren't that much $$)

I know you asked about tires but I would run what you got until they need replaced. Then keep an eye out for some good BFG A/T's and put them on those rims... It would look kinda like mine then.

Re: Bought an 84 K10!

Thanks for the compliments guys!

About the rear discs. I hope they have directions, or else I'm screwed.

About the tires/wheels. I like my wheels but I'll need tires and I want a more offroad tires, because the ones I have now tear up the yard when accelerating because they are street tires. I want to get Mud Grapplers or Terra Grapplers, but I may have to go with BFG M/T's.

Re: Bought an 84 K10!

Yay!!Welcome to the world of truck driving fools!I think the 83/84 grille was the best out of the bunch.I had an`84 Silverado with a 6.2 also.Get the Helm book for it.You`ll be glad you did.
The brakes are hydroboost.Check your p/s reservoir before anything else.If it`s low you`ll lose most of your brakes. You`ll find your brakes work better when cutting the wheel because the pressure is increased.

Re: Bought an 84 K10!

I bled the brakes today. The reservoir was almost empty last night. Brakes work GREAT now, also installed new self adjuster on the rear because the old ones look too long, but they weren't, either way I have new ones!

Helm book? You mean the POS Hanes manuals?

My uncle told us about the brake/steering setup, weird.

I went to NAPA and ordered all new hoses and belts(PS/PB belt squeaks to hell).

My dad may be buying an 84 C20 with a J code.

I drove it about 30mi after I finished the brakes. I love this thing, it has special option 3:42 gears and it will still spin sideways if you put it to the floor. I have always been told 6.2's are dogs/slow/etc, but obviously the people saying that had never driven one.

I also found out while driving it that someone put a shift kit in it... Why put a shift kit in a diesel?

Re: Bought an 84 K10!

Just drove it 4 1/2hrs about 300mi! It did good! Even at 85...top speedo # is 85. We went to go see my grandma. I took my grandma for a ride. This thing is awesome! I laid down 3 15ft strips of rubber, with her in it. It didnt need any pedal to spin em really, just needed a little brake. My grandma loved it! I cant wait to take another trip in it!

Anyone know why my steering is messed up? You have to turn the steering wheel about 1/2 - 3/4 of a turn for the wheels to start turning, it makes it hard to keep it in the center of the lane.

Also, who makes steering column parts? It needs a bunch of part by the steering wheel.

How do I get the glued on trim off? What about the other trim?

Re: Bought an 84 K10!

Hey congrats on the new truck looks like a pretty sweet ride Glad to hear that you got the brakes fixed. Glued on trim I usually go around really carefully and pry it off probably better ways then that though. When your talking about the steering is there a ton of slop anywhere did you take a look at all the steering linkage yet? Ohh ya BFG M/Ts all the way my vote!

Re: Bought an 84 K10!

for the gluied on trim, i used some fishing line, got underneath it and kept mving it and it falls off. use some simple green to get the other stickey stuff off.

Re: Bought an 84 K10!

The steering gear box on the truck may be worn. They offer rebuild kits or you can try to tighten the worm bearing and the pitman shaft adjustment.

then get the BFG A/T's there a lil cheaper but may still be more than u wanna pay, but i will vouch that i personally think that BFG makes one of the best offroad tires and have great wear, ive had mine on for about 60k miles and still have alot of life left
i know when i purchased mine they had a program called BFGoodrich's Adventure Assurance Program, which if you got stuck they called a tow for free, but i cant verify if this still is in affect

Re: Bought an 84 K10!

Brad. From expirence the slop in the steering is probably in the "socket" joint on the shaft that goes from the pitman arm to the left front wheel. In 300,000 miles I have replaced mine 3 times and I grease them regularly. Tie rod ends seem to last forever. Ball joints are the same way, every hundred to hundred fifty thousand miles your going to have to swap them out too. Only problem with the ball joints is you can't grease the upper ones easily. I was thinking I might be able to drill thru the knuckle and into the joint and install a grease fitting there. I won't do that though until I do it on spare parts to see if it will work. jim

Re: Bought an 84 K10!

Thanks again for the help. I got back a few hours ago from my first day at work. On the way home I stopped ta my dads old job(was closed)and did a big smokey one! I'll get pics tomorrow of the marks. Eventually I'll throw some crap tires on and record it! This thing redlines at 3600, but I doubt it(no I didnt redline it). I also went wheeling for the first time through some mud and sand. Sorry, no pics of it muddy, but it got a steam bath when I was done.
