Unhappy 4 Speed - Did I kill it? Help!

Ok,
so I was stopped at a stop light late last night at the bottom of my street with the truck in 2nd gear (1st is Granny) and clutch pedal depressed completely, literally sitting there stopped waiting for a green light.

All of a sudden I heard and felt [through the clutch pedal] a snap. I also heard the sound of metal-to-metal rotating around in a circular motion, most likely coming from inside the transmission itself. The truck died instantly and was towed around the block back to my house. I crawled under the truck this morning and the clutch linkage assembly is all intact and still have a normal feeling clutch. Transmission can be put into each gear easily with the truck off.

What do you guys think happened?

Thanks in advance

Sounds like something in the clutch broke. Could be the pressure plate spring or a spring can come out of the disc & get lodged in between them & lock it up. Get under neath & remove the lower cover. Have someone work the clutch pedal while you look up in there with a bright lite. You might see whats going on.

Yes and it has been quite hard to get into gear lately. When the clutch pedal was depressed and in transmission was in 2nd gear the truck did tend to creep forward when I released the brakes.

This led me to believe I needed a clutch very soon...but I dont know what kind of damage might have been incurred as of last night to the transmission itself.

I am almost certain it's the clutch and not the tranny.

I'm with the other guys, I'd go with the clutch 1st.
It's pretty hard to break a transmission when you're sitting, stopped at a red light

Sounds like the clutch to me also.I would do as suggested and pull the cover.Since you say the clutch linkage looks intact I would guess something listed above or maybe a bad throwout bearing or clutch fork.

the ball stud is where the linkage connects to the block and to the frame

Re: 4 Speed - Did I kill it? Help!

I had a spring blow out of my clutch plate and it made a terrible noise. I could still drive it as long as I did not use the clutch. At a stoplight I would have to shut it off and then put it in gear and start it with it in gear and then shift without the clutch. It got me home and then I had to change out the clutch and pressure plate. The tranny never had any problems....

Re: 4 Speed - Did I kill it? Help!

I'm curious have you tried to start it in neutral. If the problem is in the clutch I would think it would start OK. If it wont crank over it could be something on the engine side. If it starts but wont let you put it in gear, without grinding it probably is in the clutch. Just a thought.
