Side exhaust questions/opinion???
I have decided I want side exhaust pipes on my truck but I cant decide weather to exit infront or behind the rear tires. What do you guys recomend? What are the differences as far as sound level and performance? Also If you got any pics of side exhaust infront of the rear tires please post the pics. Im not sure if I like how they look. Thanks
HotRod

i loved that truck. wish i could have kept it. i like the look/sound of exit before the rear tires.

If you exit behind your rear tire then it'll be much quieter and won't get as much gas in the truck. I wouldn't think there would be much performance difference, unless your racing and want every .001 of HP you can.

low 84 : Your pipes angled out right vs. a strait 90 infront of the tire? THat looks pritty sweet.
Also will a shorter glass pack keep the same sound as a longer one but just be louder? Because i have glass packs and I love the way they sound but just wish they were a bit louder. I thought that maybe going to a shorter glass pack would keep the same type of sound but just make it louder. Let me know if im just completly wrong. Thanks HotRod

yes i angled them out at 45 degree angle. i think you have the right concept on the glass packs, the shorter ones are louder but still have the same glass pack tone. i have better pics of the exhaust but my scanner has crapped out on me.
low69cst - i not sure what you mean by having gas in cab. if you mean fumes, the only fumes i ever had in my cab were due to the fact that the gas tank basically rides shotgun. not from the exhaust.

the exhaust will be louder turned out ahead of the tires. If you like to hear it, thats the way to go......also it looks good IMO. My system is 2 1/2" , with H pipe running through Dynomax superturbos, & has 3" tailpipes with stainless tips......loud enough to hear it, but not so loud that the city cops hassle me. With the shorter system, & less bends you probably wont want a real beligerent set of muffs. I tryed a set of 40s flows, but they didnt stay on very long.......

I used to have 78" laker side pipes on the side of my '68... they look really sweet.
Don't go for the cheapies, pay for the "real" laker pipes with the perforated heat shielding in shiny chrome. That combined with fatty wheels, baby moons and a monochromatic paint scheme just looks awesome combined with minimalistic chrome on the truck, IMHO. :Sigh: I used to have a picture of yours truly at the ripe old age of about four with my lil red wagon and Momma's '68 CST in the background. Yes, it was Mom's truck, Dad had a :shudder: Hornet station wagon. My parents still tease me that I used to get asked what Daddies car sounded like and I would go, putter putter putter, and then thay would ask me what momma's truck sounded like and I'd go: VROOOOOOOOMMMM Rumble Rumble Rumble. The truck was ochre with a custom black vinyl roof and tonneau cover, no emblems, the california elephant ear mirrors, and curb feelers. (What can I say, it was 1979!) It had 11" deep dish chrome-reverse cragar rims with L60's and baby moons. Dad, in his ever-loving wisdom, left 'em sitting on the workbench in San Jose, CA when we moved to Texas, yay Dad. |

Bigger glass packs have a lower rumble and are a little quieter, because they are bigger mufflers. The guy at the exhaust shop said if I wanted it louder to put on some big tips, would make it have that strong rumble resonance.

My plan is to run my pipes out the back, just before the tailgate.
Since I plan on relocating my gas tank, should I install it before I my pipes, or it does not matter? |

Vdog, you could have the exhaust done, & run turn downs after the muffs for temporary......just explain to the man doing the ex work that you want to add tailpipes later, & he will hook you up with the proper offsets/placement on the muffs......

I've always liked side pipes. Mine's in front of the rear wheels, angled back and down a little. It's also much easier to remove a whole side, if you need to.

I am running Hooker headers, 2.5-inch pipes from the collectors, through a pair of Flowmaster 40-series, which dump into another pair of 2.5-inch tailpipes with slash-cut tips angled out, just ahead of the rear tires. The angle of the tip is parallel to the side of the body.
There is NO soundproofing in my truck, anywhere. My wife refuses to ride in it because of the harmonic droning sound it makes....kinda like the harmonic droning my ex-wife made! Anyway, it sounds good, but my goal is to have an X-pipe and extend the tailpipes out to the rear, with the ends turning down and barely visible below the rear bumper ends. So, do I like them dumping in front of the rear tires, or coming to the rear of the body? Yeah.

I was told that if you put the glasspacks on backwards that they are louder, so of course I tried it. Don't know what they sound like on my truck when facing the correct way but on backwards they sure are loud. If you look inside one, they have little pockets for the spent gasses to get caught in to quiet the noise down, when you face it the other way, the gasses just flow right over the pockets kinda like a modified straight pipe. Just a thought.

Yup, glasspacks are loud as hell installed backward......if you plan to do that, save yourself the cash on the packs & just run straightpipe! One thought tho......i tryed it (straightpipes) on the longhorn a few yrs back with a mild 355, headers, 2 1/4" pipe out the butt with 3 1/2x 18" chrome cans.......it sorta sounded like the headers were uncorked at the back bumper It was cool for a couple times around the block.......but then that squad car was cruisin the hood.....

if you plan to lower it, it goes lower alot easier if you dont have to route the pipes over the axle.
