how hard it to put a brake booster on a drum brake setup.to make power drums

If you can find a donor truck, it's not difficult at all. Everything mounts up.

If you dont, then you just purchase the parts individually or scrounge salvage yard or local sellers.

does it work with any booster that fits our truck

I used a booster off (IIRC) a 70 truck on my 68 GMC. You have to use the mounting bracket and booster, brake push rod, proportioning valve. I used my original master cylinder on mine since it was new.

There may be other's that work on these trucks but not sure which ones. See if you can do a search to go over some of the archived threads.

Yes, the search will help, be careful with 3/4 vs. 1/2 ton stuff, there are differences in brackets, push rod lengths, m/c's, and boosters. Robbing a 73+ bracket, booster, m/c, prop valve would be wisest, wouldn't it?

The 73+ MC and booster bracket works but requires a little bit of modification because it is a taller bracket. There is a thread about that somewhere. Also you shouldn't need to worry about the proportioning valve with drum/drum. These are some good links for brake set-ups. If you already have the master cylinder on the truck just add a booster with the bracket. Mikes bump and grind garage seems to have pretty decent pricing.

I did this to my buddies 69. Got a booster and all the peddle linkage from a 72 truck. Used the original master cylinder and proportioning valve that were on the 69. Only problems we had were: 1) bolting on the master cylinder, the nose of it was too low so we shimmed the bottom two bolts on the booster to level the mc; 2) the original brake lines had to be broken loose to allow them to swivel slightly as we moved the mc to it's new, farther forward, location (the lines had to also be bent slightly to make the move, taking care not to kink them); and 3) the brake switch had to be adjusted to get the brake light to function properly (this is a huge PITA, take out the instrument cluster to be able to "kind of" see what you are doing). He now has power brakes that work as good as my OEM power brakes work. I think it took about 2 hours to do the swap...about an hour to adjust the brake light switch...lol. Good luck!

oh, I forgot that you need the vaccum hose from the donor as well. If you have an quadrajunk or edelbrock carb, hook this to the base of the carb like on the donor truck...also grab the fitting in the carb that the vaccum hose threads into, this will fit quad and edelbrock carbs...hope this helps you with your swap. I looked at the thread from gmcmax, nice pics....I now remember taking out the bolts holding the column to the dash to get the bolt out of the rod hooked to the peddle, maybe not necessary but make getting that bolt out, it is kind of tight quarters in there.
